Marcella Sheldon

Marcella Sheldon, a 70-year employee of Edwards Theaters for whom

the Big Newport Theater’s main auditorium is named, has died. She was

91. She died of heart failure on Monday.

Ms. Sheldon was born in Ontario in 1912. Her career with Edwards

began in 1930 when, right out of high school, she took a job as a

secretary at the company’s office at the Alhambra Theatre to support

her mother and two sisters. When the company moved its headquarters

to Newport Beach in 1975, Ms. Sheldon moved to Mission Viejo.

Ms. Sheldon was still working part-time at the company last year

when Edwards was absorbed by Regal Cinemas -- a move that eliminated

many jobs. To honor her 70-year tenure with the company, Edwards

named its main auditorium at the Big Newport Theater after her.

Ms. Sheldon is survived by her daughter, Carola Anderson.
