Core Tour touches down in Surf City on Sept. 5

The Nokia 500 Core Tour -- a free alternative sports and music

festival -- completes its 2003 national tour Sept. 5 through 7 near

the Huntington Beach Pier.

The tour features core sports of BMX dirt jumping, skateboarding,

inline skating and mountain board jumping.

Competition will be held in both professional and amateur

divisions.

On the music front, more than 15 alternative bands from throughout

Orange County are scheduled to perform live.

Events will run between 2 and 6 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 5, and from

9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 6 and Sunday, Sept. 7.

Orange Coast College to host surf reunion

Orange Coast College will host a reunion for its intercollegiate

surf teams on Sundayon the Huntington Beach side of the Santa Ana

River Jetties.

The reunion will begin at 3 p.m., next to Huntington Beach State

Park.

Orange Coast fielded a competitive surf team from 1977 through

1982. The Pirates captured the state surfing championship on three

occasions: 1977, ’78 and ’80.

The surf team, dropped as an intercollegiate sport on campus in

1983, was coached by Laird Hayes who continues to teach in the

college’s physical education and athletics divisions.

Hayes has served as OCC’s head men’s soccer coach for more than a

decade.

“We’re trying to get as many of the guys from our surf teams out

for the reunion as possible,” he said. “We’ve put the word out, and

I’ve heard from quite a few guys in recent weeks.”

Play continues at local tennis tournament

The Huntington Beach Open Tennis Tournament, one of the county’s

oldest tennis events, continues with championship round play Saturday

and Sunday.

The tournament, now in its 42nd year, is being played at the

Pacific Sands Cabana Club located at 8141 Atlanta Ave.

Competition will take place in the following divisions: Open, Open

Senior Men, 3.5, 4.0, 4.5 and 5.0.
