Vanguard opens with two victories

Matt Hess tallied his third goal of the season and it turned into the

only score of the game as the Vanguard University men’s soccer team

prevailed, 1-0, over Colorado School of Mines in round-robin action

of the Westminster Tournament at West Jordan, Utah.

Jarrett Borrego assisted Hess’ goal, which came in the 19th minute

as the Lions improved to 2-0. Vanguard’s staunch defense included

seven saves by goalkeeper Tommaso Bianchi.

Hess, a junior forward, scored the first two goals and Borrego, a

sophomore midfielder, added the clincher as Vanguard opened its

season Thursday with a 3-2 victory over Westminster.

Sophomore midfielder David McAulay had two assists and Borrego

added one for the Lions.

Bianchi made three saves for Vanguard, which faces Embry Riddle

University of Arizona today to conclude the tournament.

VU trounces two foes

* VOLLEYBALL: The Vanguard University women’s volleyball team

opened 2-0 for the first time in seven seasons by earning a pair of

victories Friday in the opening round of the Concordia Tournament.

The Lions defeated the University of Texas Permian Basin, 30-26,

30-23, 30-24, at the Pit, then topped Holy Names College, 27-30,

30-20, 30-20, 30-28.

Freshman Kelli Whitaker, playing in her first collegiate match,

led the Lions with 12 kills, six in the opening game against the

Texas school.

Sophomore Stephanie Pfau slammed 11 kills while sophomore setter

Marissa Cothran collected 13 assists and four digs in the opening

win.

Senior Lindsay Kaiser recorded a team-high six digs.

Kerri DeHaas and Pfau had 21 and 17 kills, respectively, and

Cothran amassed 47 assists in the win over Holy Names.

Parada finishes up

* BASKETBALL: UC Irvine senior center Adam Parada scored seven

points and grabbed six rebounds in Mexico’s 102-92 men’s basketball

victory over Brazil in the Americas Olympic Qualifying Tournament

Thursday at the Roberto Clemente Coliseum in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The win improved Mexico’s record to 4-4 in the tournament, but the

team did not advance to the semifinals.

The 7-foot Parada was 2 of 6 from the field and 3 of 6 from the

free-throw line in 16 minutes.

In eight tournament games, Parada averaged 4.9 points and 5.1

rebounds.

He scored six points with six rebounds in Mexico’s 96-69 loss to

the United States Wednesday.

Anteaters fall in OT

* SOCCER: The UC Irvine women’s soccer team opened its season in

heartbreaking fashion Friday, losing at Pepperdine, 1-0, in a

nonconference game.

Ali Pavoni knocked in the game-winner off an assist from Lindsey

Redlin 1:37 into the first overtime period for the Waves, ranked No.

13 in a national coaches poll.

UCI freshman goalkeeper Marissa Welliver made six saves to hold

the Waves scoreless for more than 90 minutes in her first collegiate

game.

The Anteaters had a chance late in the second half, when sophomore

Lindsay Duke’s header sailed just left of the goal.

Anna Picarelli earned the shutout with four saves for the Waves.
