City seeks members of committee

The City Council of Costa Mesa is accepting applications for the

Downtown and Eastside Transportation Ad Hoc Committee.

The committee was established in October 2001 to produce

improvement plans for 17th street, Newport Boulevard south of 19th

Street and the Eastside.

There is one opening for an Eastside Resident and two for Newport

Boulevard business representatives. The committee meets once a month

and addresses issues of traffic circulation, pedestrian and bicycle

access, parking and median and parkway design.

Those interested may apply at https://www.ci.costa-mesa.ca.us or

send a letter of interest to the city before Sept. 17. For more

information, call (714) 754-5032.

Mayor presents monthly award

Costa Mesa Mayor Gary Monahan has recognized Matthew Ashton as the

recipient of the latest Mayor’s Award.

On July 1, Ashton heard cries and followed them to the house of an

elderly neighbor.

“The heat, coupled with the neighbor’s inability to reach a

telephone, could very well have ended her life,” said city management

analyst Carol Proctor in a press release.

The award, given to residents who go above and beyond the call of

duty, will be presented to Ashton at 6:30 p.m., Sept. 15 in the City

Council chambers.

Neighbors for Neighbors cleanup set

The nonprofit program “Neighbors for Neighbors,” will be holding

its bi-annual community cleanup on Sept. 23 with a focus on

low-income, senior owned, mobile homes.

The city is seeking donations of cash and in-kind donations of

materials and supplies for the project. For more information, call

the city hotline at (714) 754-4892 or contact neighbors coordinator

Jacqueline Reeves at (714)754-4870.
