Remember those who risk their lives

With the anniversary of the Sept. 11 attack on the World Trade Center

in New York and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. coming this

Thursday, it’s a good time to say thank you to our local firefighters

and police officers who risk their lives for us 365 days a year.

Newport Beach firefighters buried one of their own this week,

Capt. Alan Schmehl, and Newport Beach Paramedic Brian Slater is in

serious condition at Hoag Hospital after a bodysurfing accident.

Police officers, firefighters and paramedics all risk their lives for

us every day. Sept. 11 is a time to remember to show our

appreciation.

How can you, your family, office, church or synagogue, or

community group show your appreciation to your local firefighters and

police officers this week? For young children, it might be drawing a

poster or a thank-you card and delivering it to the station. For a

family, it may be making some baked goods for the firefighters or

police on duty. For a business, it could be sponsoring a firefighter

or police officer for lunch or dinner at a local restaurant.

For a service club, it could be inviting the firefighters or

police officers to join you at your meeting as the Rotary Club of

Newport- Balboa is doing Wednesday night.

RX FOR HIGH PRESCRIPTION PRICES

Are you paying too much for prescription drugs? Computer Friends

of Oasis has a program that will address this problem by using the

Internet.

Dr. U.A. Garred Sexton will present “Health Databases” on

Wednesday at the Oasis Senior Center in Corona del Mar, at the

monthly computer club program. Sexton will talk about how to find

health information sites and give guidance on search engines, sites

for primary-care societies and government agencies. He will also

discuss drug interactions, Web sites that feature alternative

medicine, and buying drugs from Canada and Mexico.

The computer club meeting will begin at 1 p.m. Sexton will give

his talk at about 1:30. Refreshments will be served afterward. A $3

fee is charged for visitors who are not members of Computer Friends.

The Oasis Senior Center is at 800 Marguerite Ave., at 5th Street,

in Corona del Mar.

Club.

Noon: The Exchange Club of the Orange Coast meets at the Bahia

Corinthian Yacht, Club for a business meeting.

6 p.m.: The 50-member Rotary Club of Newport-Balboa will meet the

Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club to hear Davey Armstrong talk about the

history of the “Great Highland Bagpipe” and how it is made. He also

will play several Irish tunes. Club members will be joined by a dozen

Newport Beach firefighters, whom the club will thank for their

7 a.m.: The 20-plus member Costa Mesa-Orange Costa Breakfast Lions

Club will meet at Mimi’s Cafe.

Noon: The 50-member Costa Mesa Kiwanis Club will meet at the

Kiwanis Club of Newport Beach-Corona del Mar will meet at the Bahia

Corinthian Yacht Club to hear Jeff Scott discuss the soccer season;

Report from Iraq”; and the 100-member Newport-Irvine Rotary Club will
