Fire Department gets $91,790
The city of Costa Mesa received $91,790 from the Federal Emergency
Management Agency and the Unites States Fire Administration for the
2003 Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program.
The funds will be used by Costa Mesa Fire Department to buy seven
new Lifepak-12 EKG monitors/defibrillators to replace old units.
The department was one of only 3,000 to have received money
through the program.
Police step up coyote awareness program
In response to increased coyote sightings and activities, the
Costa Mesa Police Department is offering awareness presentations to
teach residents how to protect their homes and animals from these
skilled predators.
Community groups and homeowners associations interested in

UC Riverside rep to stop at OCC
A representative from UC Riverside will be at Orange Coast College
from 9:20 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sept. 11 at the school’s transfer center.

Peace advocate visits Newport church
Peace advocate Donald Griggs will discuss the situation in the
Middle East, among other topics, this Sunday in Newport Beach. As
executive director of the nonprofit group Pilgrims of Ibillin, Griggs
raises money for schools in the Galilee region of Israel, promoting
peaceful co-existence between Muslims and Jews.
Griggs will preach at the 9:30 a.m. service on Sunday, Sept. 14 at
St. Mark Presbyterian Church in Newport Beach. Following the service
is an Adult Forum at 11 a.m. where Griggs will discuss his most
recent trip to Palestine.

An in-depth look at the life of Pi
The novel “Life of Pi” by Yann Martel will be the subject of the
next book discussion group at the Newport Beach Public Library. The
bestseller and winner of the Man Booker Prize, “Life of Pi” is a
story about a young man who is stranded at sea for 227 days with a
host of animals including a full-grown Bengal tiger.
Anywhere from 30 to 75 people attend the regular discussion
groups. Admission is free. Reservations are not required. The
discussion will take place from 9:15 to 11 a.m. Wednesday in the
Friends Meeting Room of the Newport Beach Central Library, 1000

The following discussion will be about the novel “Perfume” by
Patrick Suskind and will take place on Oct. 8.
