Massive cleanup day on tap
Coastal Cleanup Day will be from 9 a.m. to noon on Sept. 20.
Volunteers from across the state are set to participate in a
massive effort to maintain the shoreline.
The cleanup at Main Beach will be led by Roger von Butow of Clean
Water Now! Coalition. He can be reached at

by Joanette Willert and Dennis Yune. The other Laguna cleanup will be
at the Laguna Canyon Channel and led by Jim Meyer of Orange County

Lecture to showcase old-time Laguna Beach
The Laguna Art Museum will host a lecture by Janet Blake, curator
of collections and co-curator of Greetings from Laguna Beach. She
will speak about the history of Laguna Beach as an art colony and
about the early history of the Laguna Beach Art Assn., forerunner of
the Laguna Art Museum.
The exhibit, “Greetings from Laguna Beach: Our Town in the Early
1900s will run through Oct. 3.
The lecture will be 11 a.m. Sunday at the museum, 307 Cliff Drive.
The lecture is free to members and free to others with paid
admission to the museum.
Sierra Club to discuss Laguna land and nature
The Sierra Club will host an informational forum from 7 to 9 p.m.
Wednesday to discuss what’s happening to the natural resources, open
space and land use in Laguna Beach. The panel will be Mark Massara,
director California Coastal Program; Chris Koontz, environmental
advocate; and Penny Elia, Save Hobo Aliso Ridge Task Force chair.
The meeting will be in the board room at Aliso Creek Inn and Golf
Course, 31106 S. Coast Highway. Light refreshments will be served and
free parking is available in the lower parking lot.

PFLAG meeting set for Wednesday
Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays will host its
monthly meeting Wednesday.
This month’s meeting will host Marc Adams, co-founder of
“Heartstrong, Inc,” a group that provides support to gay, lesbian,
bisexual and transgendered people who are affected adversely by the
influence of religious educational institutions.

League hosts meeting on Election Fair project
The League of Women Voters will be hosting a strategy session for
the planning of a 2004 Election Fair for Laguna Beach.
The goal is to bring together a broad spectrum of political and
community groups interested in exploring issues with candidates.
The meeting will be 7 p.m. Sept. 24 in the Wells Fargo Bank

It’s time to get the palettes ready
The 2003 Palette Competition has begun.
Artists are provided a prepared 4-foot by 3-foot wooden palette on
which to paint original artwork.
Entries will be accepted by Laguna Beach residents, artists with a
studio in Laguna Beach or showing in a Laguna Beach gallery, students
of Laguna Beach schools or the Laguna Beach College of Art and Design
or artists exhibiting in the Sawdust Festival, Art-A-Fair or Festival
of Arts. Proof will be required.
Applicants are asked to submit a palette design on 8 1/2 by
11-inch paper, in color, within the border of a palette outline. The
design must have a horizontal orientation.
The deadline is 5 p.m. Oct. 10 and should be delivered to the
Community Services Department, 505 Forest Ave.
‘Save the Canyon’ history showcased on Sept. 26
The Laguna Beach Historical Society invites the public to hear
Mark Chamberlain and Jerry Burchfield.
The Laguna Beach Historical Society will hold the “History of Save
Laguna Canyon” by Chamberlain and Burchfield, who have been involved
with canyon environment for more than 20 years.
The event will start at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 26 at the City Council
chambers, 505 Forest Ave. There is no charge to attend the talk.
Top of the World neighborhood picnic set
The Top of the World Neighborhood Assn. will hold a neighborhood
picnic from 3 to 6 p.m. on Sunday.
Everyone is welcome to the pot-luck at the Alta Laguna Park
playground area. Neighbors and friends are asked to bring a main
course food dish, a salad or a desert. The “Best Dishes” will be
honored by the association board. The focus will be on children with
activities for them to enjoy including a demonstration by the Laguna
Beach Fire Department. Bring beach chairs and hats.
The day before, hikers are welcome to join Park Ranger Barbara
Norton for a 1 1/2-hour loop hike. Those interested should meet at 9
a.m. Saturday at the picnic table at the mini park at the end of Alta
Laguna Boulevard. Comfortable shoes and water are recommended.
