Oilers down Tustin in boys’ water polo

William Meripol posted six goals and the Huntington Beach High boys’

water polo team successfully launched its 2003 season Monday with a

13-8 victory at Tustin.

The Oilers led, 7-3 at the half and held the Tillers at bay in the

second half.

Nicholas Sullivan added three goals for the Oilers.

Marina won the championship of the Conejo Valley Classic at

Westlake High Saturday by defeating Leland High of San Jose, 11-6, in

the tournament final.

The Vikings’ Rory Kelly was named tournament MVP and teammate Reed

Honrath was named all-tournament.

Edison High dropped its opener Monday to host Saddleback, 11-10.

The teams were tied, 8-8, through three quarters of play but the

Roadrunners outscored the Chargers, 3-2, in the final period.

Kyle Sarria led Edison with four goals and Taylor Budnick scored

twice.

In girls’ volleyball, Huntington Beach High’s girls’ volleyball

team dropped its first outing of the 2003 campaign by dropping a

four-game match to host Corona del Mar, 25-19, 25-15, 20-25, 27-25,

in the season opener for both schools.

Lindsey Ensign’s 14 kills paced the Sea Kings, ranked fourth in

the CIF-SS Division III-A.

In girls’ tennis, Huntington Beach was a 15-3 winner over host

Irvine in its season opener.

Lauren Pascoe swept at No. 1 singles by scores of 6-2, 6-0, 6-2,

and the Oilers’ top doubles team of Stephanie Chen and Amy Kaufman

swept their Vaquero opponents, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0.

Edison dropped its season opener in a 10-8 loss at Northwood.

In girls’ golf, Marina won its 2003 opener with a 211-265 win over

Cypress at Cypress Golf Course. Junior Jennifer Osborn shot an

even-par 35 to lead the Vikings.

Marina came back Monday to defeat Rosary, 218-241, at Meadowlark Golf Course.
