Abel Cardona made the most of his first start as the primary running

back in Edison High’s backfield when the Chargers met up with San

Clemente in the season opener for both teams last Friday.

Cardona, a junior, scored Edison’s first three touchdowns -- all

in the opening quarter of play -- and the quick start sent the

Chargers on their way to an eventual 26-21 upset victory on the road.

He added a fourth touchdown run in the third period to put the

game away.

“Four touchdowns isn’t too bad for a junior in his first game,”

Edison Coach Dave White said. “Abel had a real nice game.”

Cardona scored on first-quarter runs covering four yards and twice

from three yards out.

Edison led 20-0 at the half and 20-7 midway through the third

quarter when Cardona scored on a 13-yard scamper that pushed Edison

into a 26-7 advantage.

Cardona finished the night with 117 yards on 29 carries.
