A shift in the Laguna Beach High lineup Tuesday proved to be

beneficial for the Breakers, who defeated nonleague rival Dana Hills,

10-0, in girls’ tennis action at Dana Hills.

Top singles player Claire Rietsch and Katie Ochwat, who usually

plays doubles but played Tuesday at No. 3 singles, earned sweeps to

help get the Breakers past a determined Dolphins squad.

Jackie Reed and Kellie Ammerman won two of three at No. 1 doubles

for the Breakers.

Previously, Laguna opened its 2003 campaign with a 15-3 win over

Woodbridge.

In that match, Rietsch and No. 2 Loren Butterwick earned sweeps in

singles play and the tandem of Correy Miller and Ochwat swept at No.

2 doubles.

In boys’ water polo, Laguna got the Rick McKee era off to a

successful start as it outlasted visiting La Habra in two overtime

periods Tuesday, 15-14.

Nima Mortizavi led the Breakers in scoring with four goals.

Other multiple goals were scored by Michael Dick and Ryan

Winfield, each with three goals, and Ryan Fair who scored twice.

Bret Burge came up with 10 saves.

“It was a great team effort,” McKee said. “The kids showed a lot

of character in not giving up. There were several momentum swings on

both sides. It was a great match.”

In girls’ volleyball, host Laguna was swept Tuesday by Brea

Olinda, 21-25, 11-25, 25-9.

It was the second loss of the season for the Breakers who

previously were defeated by Dana Hills in their season opener Sept.

11.

In girls’ golf Tuesday, Laguna fell to St. Margaret’s, 269-298, in

the Breakers’ season opener.
