Exemption still alive

Brian Wilson of the United States, playing on a sponsor’s exemption,

defeated Robert Haybittel of Australia, 6-4, 6-4, in the

quarterfinals Friday to set up a semifinals match today against

Yugoslavia’s Aleksandar Vlaski in the Diadora Pro Championships at

the Costa Mesa Tennis Center.

The men’s United States Tennis Association Futures tour stop

continues Sunday with championship matches in singles and doubles.

Wilson and Vlaski will square off at 11 a.m. today in the semis,

following by Jimy Szymanski of Venezuela and Matthew Hanlin of Great

Britain in the other semi.

Eagles reverse fortunes

* TENNIS: Estancia High’s No. 1 singles and first doubles teams

both swept to lead the host Eagles to an 11-7 nonleague victory over

Calvary Chapel Santa Ana on Friday. Estancia lost to Calvary, 17-1,

last season.

Stacie Nellor swept at No. 1 singles while Asia Ingram and Heather

Morton won all three sets at No. 1 doubles for the Eagles (4-0, 3-0

in the Golden West League).

Hillgren leads Sage Hill

* VOLLEYBALL: Sage Hill School swept visiting Vasquez, 25-14,

25-16, 25-7, in a nonleague girls volleyball match Friday as

sophomore outside hitter Sophia Hillgren (nine kills), sophomore

middle blocker Cat Dailey (six service aces and two stuff blocks) and

freshman setter Kelsey Lawler (17 assists) led the way.

The Lightning will host Calvary Chapel Downey on Tuesday at 3 p.m.

Sailors shine in tourney

* VOLLEYBALL: Newport Harbors girls played three pool-play matches

Friday in the Dave Mohs tournament at Edison High against Norco,

Lakewood and Capistrano Valley and won all three. Newport’s Alyson

Jennings recorded 22 kills in three games Friday without a hitting

error, while teammates Kiley Hall and Taryn Tarnutzer played well.

Foothill tops CdM

* WATER POLO: Corona del Mar High’s boys water polo team staged a

late rally, but came up short against host Foothill in the Knights’

8-7 nonleague win. Thomas Pearson (three goals), Daniel Niehenke

(two) and Tom Money (two) led CdM.

Cypress blanks OCC

* SOCCER: Cypress shut out Orange Coast, 3-0, in an Orange Empire

Conference women’s soccer game.

Cynthia Pinkney scored a pair of second-half goals to put the game

out of reach for Cypress (5-0, 2-0 in the OEC). Cypress ran its

current unbeaten streak in Orange Empire Conference play to 94 games

(87-0-7).

The Pirates (1-4, 1-2) were the last team to knock off the

Chargers, posting a 1-0 win to wrap up play in the 1995 season.

UCI men fall on road

* SOCCER: The University of New Mexico scored three first-half

goals en route to a 3-2 nonconference men’s soccer victory over UC

Irvine in Albuquerque.

‘Eaters beat Boise State

* SOCCER: Caroline Kabe knocked in the game-winning goal at 53:08

and Lauren Baer added another goal as the host UC Irvine women’s

soccer team defeated Boise State, 2-0. Freshman goalie Marissa

Welliver recorded her fourth shutout.

UCI downs Fullerton

* VOLLEYBALL: Kelly Wing had 29 kills and 10 digs as the UC Irvine

women’s volleyball team beat host Cal State Fullerton, 30-17, 33-31,

21-30,30-25.
