CdM upends Costa Mesa

Camden Nicholson scored two goals, including the game-winner, for the

Corona del Mar boys under-14 soccer team’s 3-2 victory against the

Costa Mesa Patriots in AYSO Region 57 action. Nicholson scored the

game-winner on a penalty kick in the fourth quarter.

Danny Baker scored the second goal and played midfield while Paul

Bioche, Dillon Norton and Max Newfield kept the pressure on the

Patriots’ defense.

Scotty Berkhausen, Jon Kiani, Eric Wright and James Petrilli

covered the field well.

* CdM 2, Newport Harbor 2

CdM tied the game 1-1 on a goal by Bioche off an assist from

Nicholson. Newport took a 2-1 lead into the fourth quarter, but

Petrilli tied the score on a put-in after a corner kick.

CdM’s offense was led by Baker, Kiani, Michael McHugh and Norton.

Defenders Berkhausen, Kenny Cooper, Russell Goldberg, Sam Nadalman,

Newfield and Wright stopped numerous Newport threats.

In boys under-12 action:

* Hawks 4, Fire 1

Harrison Rolfes scored twice to lead the Hawks to victory. He was

aided on offense by Allen Brown and Preston Risser. Brown assisted on

a Rolfes’ header for one of the goals.

Taylor Bathran, Graeme Fraser and Andrew Iverson also had assists

for the Hawks.

Kevin Zipser, Turner Raleigh, David Fenner and Zack Martin

anchored the Hawks’ midfield.

Zachary Greensite, Christopher Piggot and Ryan Crawford led the

defense.

In boys under-11 play:

* CdM Select 5, Irvine 0

CdM recorded its fourth shutout in five games, jumping out to a

2-0 lead when Blake Thomsen scored on the first drive with Brent

Lawson assisting. Kjell Wolker and Jack Gorab also scored in the

first half, the latter on an assist from Brennan Anderson.

Taylor Ross scored twice in the second half, including one on a

corner kick from Mason Case.

The defense, led by Garrett Larson, Nick Curci, Jensen Rhinehart

and Brent Gray, stymied many Irvine scoring chances with the help of

goalkeeper Clark Cashion.

In girls under-10 action:

* Great Whites 5, Stingers 0

Maddy O’Connor led the Great Whites with three goals and an assist

while Meredith Kline and Alannah Connealy also found the back of the

net despite strong play from Stingers’ goalkeeper Emily Frojen.

Baily Ashton led the Great White defense against a litany of shots

by the Stingers’ Rachel Camp and Sidney Raguse.

* Red Hot Chili Peppers 2, Tigers 1

Caroline Grant scored on an assist from Lexie Shaw and Skylar Dapp

added another goal to pace the Chili Peppers. Dapp converted a

rebound off a shot from Jenna Funsten in the in the second period.

Rachel Cashion and Chloe Dapp led the offense while Taylor

Elmajian anchored the defense.

In boys under-10 play:

* Black Hawks 8, Steel Dragons 4

David Moore scored four goals and Alex Moore and Michael Bui added

two apiece for the Black Hawks.

Defenders Colin Beaver and Karl Malone Jr. stopped many

counterattacks with goalkeeper Zachary Fox making several saves to

preserve the win.

In boys under-7 play:

* The Wolf Pack began its season with a 1-0 victory. Jordan Hauser

scored the game’s lone goal alongside Clint Henderson and Blake

Fesko.

Andrew Wypsopal, Ross Cameron and Billy Hoffman all played strong

defense in front of goalkeepers Robbie Rosoff and Matthew Daruty.

Both goalkeepers made diving saves.

In AYSO Region 97 action:

* The Blue Meteors, in the boys under-10 division, continued to

improve. Dustin Long and Grey Berman made saves in goal while David

Verona, Ishmael Alayali and Chase Whiting produced some breakaways.

Verona hit the crossbar with one of his shots.

Christopher Selby and Nathan Fulmizi made several touches on the

ball and Michael Reo sped across the field for passes.

Adrian Salas blocked many shots and booted some passes upfield

while Daniel Calvillo, playing in only his second game, deterred

shots and added passes.

* A.C. Milan 6, Spitfires 2

Landon Gyulay led the way for Milan with four goals as Sam Sykes

and Max Johnson each added single goals for Milan (2-0), tied for

first place in the boys under-10 division No. 5. Adam Kinder scored

both goals for the Spitfires.

Nick McCann spearheaded a stingy Milan defense along with Charlie

Pena, True Tamplin and Christian Franco. Ian Baugh and Ryan Cerrato

each made several saves in goal while midfielders Willie Pyle, Jesse

Torres and Kyle Regan controlled most of the game for Milan.

Joey Lawton, Matthew Masarik, Erik Higbe and A.J. Lowder all

fought hard for the Spitfires.

Blake Norton, Sam Peters, R.J. Roberts and Ryan Shannon also

hustled.

* Atomic Fireballs 3, Hurricanes 0

Tyler Palmquist, Corey Kroeger and Logan Friend each scored once

in the shutout.

Forwards Braden Delannoy and Conner Quinn kept constant pressure

on the Hurricanes with help from midfielders Blake Smith and Trent

Zimmerman adding aggressive play and key throw-ins.

Friend and Jack Hanle turned away several shots in goal for the

Fireballs. Alex Atenco and Sean Duggan led the defense.

In girls under-8 play:

* The Girls on Fire demonstrated strong teamwork in their game

Sept. 13.

Analysa Vivanco began the scoring in the first quarter and was

suppored by Ricky Barton, Alana Courier and Emily Conant in goal

throughout the second period.

Berkley Van Oostendorp was in goal during the third period and was

supported by the defense of Reo Nathan and Vivanco.

Courier and Nathan added goals with Cortlynn Clement holding the

opposing offense.

In boys under-8 play:

* The Flame Throwers and the Red Storm each scored once in the

competitive matchup. Brandon Beck scored for the Flame Throwers on a

high kick to the upper corner of the net on a pass from Mickey Moran.

Jack Williamson, Mossimo Navarette and Wyatt Robertson all displayed

strong defense.

* The Green Giants faced the Dragons.

Mathew LeGrandeur made accurate passes to Trent Burgess, Carlton

Chang and Christian Coufos. Jack Blake was named team captain.

* Both the Green Goblins and Red Dragons fought hard against one

another at Harper School in Costa Mesa.

Jake Farwell, Wil Crook, Andrew Dimas, Marc Gehlke and Buddy

Mitchell all made strong passes. Defender T.J. Tarazevits enabled

Chas Beck, Joey Gregory and Eli Barton to score goals.

In girls under-7 play:

* Brittany Welsh led the Hula Girls with three goals against the

Surfer Girls. Caroline Gels, Mallory Gyulay and Gabby Shelley each

added one goal while strong defense by MacKenzie Gaddis, Kappy Fuller

and Kierstyn Yardley held off the opposition in the fourth quarter.

Kate Pipkin led the way in goal while Amanda Sheppard, Carlee

Kapana and Rowan Frederiksen all hustled.

Abbey Pickett added hustle while Rachel Whitelegge and Kelsey

Prater played tough defense.

* Both the Flame Flowers and Blue Flames got the ball into scoring

position many times.

Nicole Leal and Samantha Yeager scored goals for the Flaming

Flowers with Emma Erickson and Jaynie Hexberg pushing the ball into

scoring position several times.

Erickson, Daniella Carrese and Camille Christensen played solid

defense and slowed down the Blue Flames’ attack.

Alanna Aguirre and Leah Castillo each made several saves in goal.

In boys under-7 action:

* Blake Jessen scored two goals on four shots to lead the

Fireballs in the early going.

Ben Bockrath followed with three goals as Luke Bradbury and Jake

Noblett each had strong runs at the goal.

Keith Marshall, Mickey Beliakoff and Quin McKay all played staunch

defense.

* James Porter and John Drayton scored goals for the Blue Flames

against the Tigers. Eric Pineda, Will Hickman and Jimmy Preston kept

the ball moving toward the goal with excellent ball handling and

speed.

Peter Goodman made a slide tackle and passed the ball accurately.

Elliot Fyre and Jack Heald played solid defense in front of

goalkeeper Grant Fuchs.

In girls under-6 action:

* Emily Goltz, Erika Ellis and Charlotte Menke all dribbled well

and scored goals for the Fireflies against the Green Gators.

Candace Callahan and Quincy Morgan battled for possession

frequently while Heather Roberts made several throw-ins and booted

the ball toward the Gators’ goal.

In boys under-6 play:

* Alex Escalera and Baer Lanfried both scored their first goals of

the season on assists by Charlie Wiggs and Hunter Holden for the

Silver Sharks against the Yellow Sharks.

Chase Adelsohn blocked several shots by the Yellow Sharks while

Collin Pipkin hustled.

The Silver Sharks hope to get Alex Michelson back soon.

* Cade Clement scored two goals for the Blue Sharks against the

Blue Dolphins Sept. 6. He was helped on offense from R.J. Reid and

Kevon Andonian.

The Sharks’ defense rose to the occasion with stops by Jack

McClintock, Mason Lindh, Spike Stoneman and Jake Van Herwaarden.

The Blue Sharks and Men in Black faced one another Sept. 6.

Van Herwaarden, Clement and Stoneman led the offense while

Andonian, Lindh and McClintock anchored the defense.

* Reed Rutter scored the lone goal for the Red Hot Chili Peppers

against the Barracudas in the second game of the season.

Jack Cornuke contributed offensively while Wilson Lubeck ran down

numerous Barracuda breakaways. Jack McKasson and Peter Harano also

made strong defensive stops.

In Coast Soccer League play:

* The Newport-Mesa Breakers, a soccer team consisting of

9-10-year-old girls from Costa Mesa and Newport Beach, continued

their winning ways with a 7-0 triumph over the San Juan Wave.

Anna Venturini opened the scoring with a goal off a Rachel Kerce

assist and Sierra Gordon followed with three first-half scores to

give the Breakers a commanding 4-0 halftime lead.

Venturini scored two more goals in the second half and Heather

Flores added a single tally to finish the scoring.

Josie Jogwe, Courtney McIntosh and Brooke Lux were credited with

assists.

Goalkeeper Lauren Terry anchored the defense with help from Shanay

Fischer, Claire Castillo and Lux. Andrea Chavez sparkled at striker.

The Breakers are now 22-0 dating to the summer, when they won four

tournaments.
