Defending Golden West League girls volleyball champion Costa Mesa

High defeated visiting Saddleback, 25-16, 26-24, 25-11, Wednesday in the league opener for both schools.

Vicky Pham and Jackie Havens had five kills apiece and Jenny

Sparks added 13 assists and three ace serves for the Mustangs (1-2).

Saddleback is 0-3.

Poway tops Sailors

* GOLF: Visiting Poway handed Newport Harbor its first girls golf

loss of the season, 199-237, Wednesday at Santa Ana Country Club.

Kayleigh Horn shot 8-over-par 42 to pace the Sailors (4-1). Natalie

Draganza (43) and Ashley Jacobs (45) also played well for Newport.

Peninsula handles Tars

* TENNIS: Newport Harbor senior Diana Khoury earned the lone

singles triumph, while Chrissy Schwartz and Sasha Dunlap won a

singles set in the Sailors’ 16-2 nonleague girls tennis loss to

visiting Peninsula Wednesday.

OCC sweeps Mt. SAC

* VOLLEYBALL: Christine Woller recorded 15 kills and Donka Drozd

delivered 14 to help lead the Orange Coast College women’s volleyball

team to a 30-15, 30-17, 30-26 nonconference victory over host Mt. San

Antonio Wednesday.

OCC takes down IVC

* GOLF: The Orange Coast College women’s golf team, led by

Lorraine Fernando and Laura Sumpter, defeated Irvine Valley, 359-374,

in a nonconference match at Costa Mesa Golf & Country Club’s Mesa

Linda course Wednesday.

Sea Kings bested

* GOLF: The Corona del Mar High girls golf team fell to Santa

Margarita, 218-225, in a nonleague match Wednesday at Newport Beach

Country Club. Katie Albright, Katie McKittric and Jonna Kim all shot

9-over-par 44 to pace CdM (3-2).
