Four Laguna Merit Scholar semifinalists

The names of about 1,600 semifinalists in the 49th annual National

Merit Scholarship Program were announced Sept. 17 and four Laguna

Beach High School students have qualified -- Marisa Reisman, Jeremy

Graves, Grant Hofmeister and Michael Codini.

These students have an opportunity to continue to compete for some

8,000 Merit Scholarship awards worth $32 million. To continue, the

semifinalists now have to fulfill several requirements and advance to

finalist standing.

To become a finalist, a semifinalist must have a record of very

high academic performance, be endorsed and recommended by their

school principal and earn SAT scores that confirm their earlier

qualifying test performance. They also must submit a detailed

scholarship application that includes the student’s self-descriptive

essay and information about their participation and leadership in

community and school activities.
