Carnevale, First Sundays coming up

SUZIE HARRISON

The Fabulous Miss Thing was the perfect capper for Music in the Park,

which conducted its final concert Sunday. But I’m looking forward to

the wild sights and sounds of the Carnevale Film Festival, the fun of

First Sundays and the continuing pleasure of Art Walk.

TAKE A MAGIC CARPET RIDE

Elvis Schoenberg’s Orchestre Surreal lived up to its surrealistic

part of the name at Sunday’s final episode of Music in the Park for

this season. The Fabulous Miss Thing with her groovy garb, wig and

antennae along with the sounds of the multi-layered orchestra made

for a lively scene.

The songs they cooked up in their creative kitchen were tasty and

the crowd was definitely biting. Music such as an excerpt from the

“1812 Overture,” a bit from the “Star Wars Soundtrack” and songs such

as “Live and Let Die,” “Purple Haze,” “We Are the Champions,” and a

fine collection of others were performed in a format like no other --

a mixology of classic rock, classical, some soulful lyrics

accompanied by a bit of the inane. Needless to say the crowd easily

joined the band on their turf of existence and will happily extend

the welcome mat to them to perform in Laguna Beach anytime.

COLORFUL CARNEVALE

FILM FESTIVAL

Come one, come all to Laguna’s inaugural Carnevale, starting with

the Carnevale Film Festival Saturday and its three films playing at

the Forum Theater.

Viareggio Italy. “Adored in Languages I Don’t Understand” is playing

and their exciting adventure in winning the International Costume

Competition in Venice. They were the first Americans ever to achieve

such a feat. “One Upon a Mime” will be playing at 3 p.m. and is the

story of Jon Beau Lee’s adventures in and out of mask, in front and

behind the camera at Carnevale 2003 in Venice and Viareggio.

Tickets are $8 per film or $20 for all three films. The Forum

Theater is located at the Festival of Arts Grounds at 650 Laguna
