Norton keys Mustangs’ win

Parker Norton scored two touchdowns to lead the Costa Mesa Pop Warner

Jr. Pee Wee Black Mustangs (9-11-year-olds) to a 24-7 victory over

the South Coast Tritons on Sept. 20.

Norton scored on runs of 48 and 59 yards and had a 68-yard

interception return for a touchdown nullified because of a penalty.

Mark Contreras scored his third touchdown of the year on a 57-yard

run and had a 62-yard TD called back due to a penalty. Contreras has

gained 217 yards on 16 carries through the first two games.

Quarterback Michael Taormina threw a 37-yard strike to Brandon

Kelly for the Mustangs’ fourth TD. The offensive line of Dakota

Gilbert, Dillon Miller, Grant McKee, Graeme Fraser and Spencer Dalby

opened large gaps for Mustang tailbacks.

Costa Mesa (2-0) limited the Tritons to 63 yards of total offense.

Buzzy Yokoyama, Jack Jeffries, Gilbert, Contreras, Norton, Tyler

Henry, Tori Morgan, Matt Porteous and Mark Sakioka had hits on

defense.

In Pee Wee (11-12-year-olds) action:

* Costa Mesa Green Mustangs 20, La Habra Blue Lions 0:

Frank DeNoewer, Jacob Folsom and Chris Gute had long touchdown

runs to lead the Green Mustangs (1-1) to victory.

Todd Davis and Jordan Palmer alternated at quarterback behind an

offensive line bolstered by Christian Argumedo, Sean DiBuono, Brett

Farthing, Robbie Gemayal, Ryan Hatcher, Cameron Hobbs, Jeff Hamilton,

Jose Martinez, Michael Mataele and Ryan Schluttenhofer.

Michael Kelly, Ben Ward, Jesse Dawson and Blake Davey shined on

defense.

In Newport-Mesa Jr. All-American Football action:

* Jr. Clinic (7-8-year-olds) Seahawks 7, Baldwin Hills Bruins 6:

The Seahawks remained undefeated (3-0) and alone in first place

with the victory.

Quarterback Levi Stillman led the Seahawks down the field in the

third quarter to tie the score 6-6 and then handed off to J.C Genova,

who scored the game-winning extra point behind the blocking of Taro

Doone, Josh Rivera and Rocky Feinberg.

Captains Daniel Albert (fullback, tackle) and Doone (center,

defensive end) led throughout the game. Colbe Koste was effective on

both sides of the line.

The defense has held opponents to 6.3 yards through the first

three games. The defense features middle linebacker Jeff Carlyle and

defensive linemen Feinberg and Doone, along with nose guards Cameron

Davis and Garrett Farthing, Chris Johnstone and Koste with ends Doone

and James Christian. Outside linebackers and cornerbacks include

Rivera, Genova, Stillman, Aaron Crosby, Levi Swoger, Cablay and

Marquise Broussard.

Quarterbacks Genova and Crosby guided the Seahawks while Genova,

Cablay and Carlyle ran the ball as well.

Christian, Rivera, Koste, Tyler Rios, Feinberg, Farthing and

Johnstone opened holes along the line.

Christian handled kicking duties with Rios, Nic Landstrom, Koste,

Davis, Stephen Keenan and James Barrett aiding on special teams.

Barrett, Broussard and Landstrom plugged holes on the Seahawks’

defensive line. Albert, Rios and Feinberg each made key tackles with

less than a minute to play to preserve the victory.

In Pee Wee (11-12-year-olds) play:

* The Baldwin Hills Bruins took a lead in the second quarter and

kept the Newport Seahawks at-bay.

The Seahawks (2-1) scored on a 20-yard pass from Mike Helfrich to

Matt Morris as time dwindled in the first half. The Bruins led at the

half, 8-6.

Quarterback Adrian Luchs also led the Seahawks.

Newport’s defense of Andrew Hicks, Sean Hooper, Mike Lancaster,

Kyle Chene and Nick Svendsen stopped four Bruins possessions inside

the 20-yard line in the second half.

Scott Frazier, Ryan Albert, Sean Breslin, Cathen Cokas and Kyle

Cablay pressured the Bruins’ quarterback into two turnovers.

In Clinic (8-10-year-olds) action:

* Baldwin Hills Bruins 13, Seahawks 0:

Newport got within the Seahawks’ 20-yard line four times, but was

unable to capitalize. Baldwin Hills scored on two long touchdown runs

in the third quarter.

Parker Eddy, Blair Luchs, Matt Carlyle and John Barton all ran

well and Jake Hall made his debut at quarterback. Chase Favreau was

on the receiving end of a Hall pass.

Mario Rosalles, A.J. Swies, Angelo Angeledes and Favreau were

solid along the offensive line. Luchs, Eddy, Condino, Carlyle,

Favreau, Rosalles and Swies all keyed the defense.

Hunter Molnar, Jack Kanen, Justin Gildart, Zack Beaudine, Spencer

Schmider, Louis Sheldon, Kellon Truxton, Aaron White, Ian Klug and

Joseph Scrivner all showed their talents on both sides of the ball.

In Jr. Pee Wee (9-11-year-olds) play:

* Baldwin Hills Bruins 35, Seahawks 0:

The Seahawks gained yardage on the running of Blake Burkhart, who

had 25 carries.

Reid Wallace helped stop the Bruin offense in the first half and

then led the offense at quarterback.

The Bruins steered away from Wallace in the second half, but T.J.

Danner and Nathan McFarland wore down the Bruin offensive line.

The game was stopped in the second half when offensive guard Jimmy

Reed was hit from behind as he was engaged in a block. Reed was

hospitalized, but was released later in the day.

Reed is not expected to miss any time.

Josh Starnes, an offensive and defensive tackle, rolled his ankle

in the fourth quarter and sustained torn ligaments. He is likely out

for the season.
