YOM KIPPUR

The Pacific Community of Secular Humanistic Jews will present a

Yom Kippur observance at 1 p.m. Oct. 6 at the Unitarian Church of

Costa Mesa. The event will consist of a Yom Kippur program,

discussions on medical ethics, Jewish history through music and the

roadmap to peace, and then a full-course dinner. Information: (949)

NEWPORT-MESA IRVINE INTERFAITH COUNCIL

The Interfaith Council will present awards to faith communities,

service clubs and businesses for community service activities during

2002-03. The event will take place Oct. 15. Lunch will cost $7.50 per

person with a reservation and $10 without. The event will take place

CAPPELLA CANTORUM

Cappella Cantorum, the young adult choir of St. John Vianney

Chapel, is beginning its fifth year. The choir is open to students in

grades six to 12. It provides active faith participation for teens

during their high school years. Participation includes singing at

mass regularly and at special events. Rehearsals are from 11 a.m. to

1 p.m. Saturdays in the chapel, at 314 Marine Ave., Balboa Island.

An evening with Sunbeam Music

The Sebastian Trio, featuring piano, violin and flute players,

will perform at the Costa Mesa Seventh-day Adventist Church on Oct.

HIGH HOLIDAY SERVICES

The Chabad Jewish Center is once again organizing High Holiday

services. The free services are geared mainly toward unaffiliated

Jewish families residing in Orange County. Rosh Hashana dates are:

today and Sunday at 10 a.m. Yom Kippur dates are: Oct. 5 at 6 p.m.

and Oct. 6 at 10 a.m. The services will be held at the Hyatt

ENVIRONMENTAL SCHOLARSHIP

St. Mark Presbyterian Church in Newport is offering an

environmental scholarship fund for two students. The scholarships

will only be offered through Chapman University and UC Irvine.

NEW PASTOR

Jon Kwong is a new pastor at Resurrection Beach Metropolitan

Community Church. Kwong will provide an emphasis on outreach to young

CANDLELIGHT SERVICE

There will be a special Candlelight Service that will share

faith’s effect on those affected by mental illness from 5:30 to 6:30

p.m. Oct. 12 at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, 600 St. Andrews

Road. The guest speakers will be the Rev. Dr. Jim Stout and the Rev.

PARENTING GROUP

Jewish Family Service of Orange County is forming a parenting

group to help parents to understand and deal with the feelings and

behavior of their children. The group meets from 10 to 11:30 a.m. the

first and third Mondays of the month at the center, 250 E. Baker St.,

SPIRIT OF ADOPTION

St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, at 600 St. Andrews Road in

Newport Beach, will host guest speaker Jeff Carlson, director of

Bethany Christian Services, to discuss and work through some of the

OUR LADY QUEEN

OF ANGELS CHURCH

Our Lady Queen of Angels Church in Newport Beach. will holds its

annual Paris Mission from Oct. 6 to 8. The presenter will be Jesuit

Father Tom Allender. The presentation topic will be “Anger to

Forgiveness.” The presentation will be given during the 8 a.m. mass

Jewish Family Service is offering a support and discussion group

for adults whose children or spouses suffer from alcohol and drug

BAHAI FIRESIDES

Members of the Bahai faith hold informal public discussions on

spiritual topics at 7:30 p.m. every Friday and at 11:30 the last

Sunday of the month. The talks include brunch or dinner. Also,

A 26-lesson study on the life of Jesus Christ titled “Journey to

MEDITATION LESSONS

A free “lectio divina” meditation group meeting is held at 7:10

a.m. Tuesdays at Our Lady Queen of Angels, 2046 Mar Vista Drive,

Newport Beach. Lectio is a style of meditation that includes using

Scripture or a special reading as a stimulus. The Christian

The Jewish Family Service offers a support group for women older
