for Race for the Cure

Early registration for the Race for the Cure fund-raiser for

breast cancer takes place today from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the

mall-level entrance to Robinson’s May in Fashion Island.

The Race for the Cure, which includes different walk and run

events for women, men and children, will take place Sunday at Fashion

Island beginning at 6:30 a.m.

Nominations on

for service honor

Nominations are being accepted for the city of Costa Mesa’s Circle

of Service, established by the City Council to commemorate former

residents who provided significant service to the city, made an

extraordinary contribution to the city or contributed to the history

of Costa Mesa.

The Circle of Service dedication ceremony will take place Feb. 20,

2004, in Lions Park.

To be nominated, the candidate must have been deceased at least

six months before the nomination; must have been a resident of Costa

Mesa for at least eight years; must have been involved in community

service for at least five consecutive years; or have given his or her

life in the service of the nation or community.

The application should be completed by a family member or member

of the community. If service to an organization is identified,

corresponding written support form that organization is required.

Applicants must submit a check in the amount of $300 payable to the

city for the purchase of the memorial plaque.

Applications can be obtained at the Recreation Division at City

Hall, 77 Fair Drive. Applications will be accepted through Oct. 3.

The Parks and Recreation Commission will consider all nominations and

recommend two to the City Council for approval.

A nice smelling discussion

“Perfume,” a novel by Patrick Suskind, will be the subject of the

next book discussion of the Newport Beach Public Library. Described

as a “Kafkaesque” tale, “Perfume” is the a horror tale set in

18th-century France.

The discussion will take place from 9:15 to 11 a.m. in the Friends

Meeting Room of the Central Library, 1000 Avocado Ave. The discussion

is open to the public. Reservations are not necessary.

Bareboat cruising lessons offered

Orange Coast College’s School of Sailing and Seamanship will be

offering a live-aboard, bareboat cruising excursion this fall aboard

the college’s Cal 48 Glin de Mar.

Bareboat cruising focuses on the skills, knowledge and equipment

necessary for successful offshore cruising.

The cruises are set for Saturday, Nov. 1, and Sunday, Nov. 2, and

Friday, Nov. 7, through Sunday, Nov. 9. Students participating in the

weekend cruises will earn U.S. Sailing Bareboat Certification. The

cost of the trip is $735.
