Newport Harbor High’s girls cross country team won the 12-team

Huntington Beach Invitational Saturday at Huntington Beach’s Central

Park.

The Sailors scored 58 points, followed by Los Alamitos’ 74 and

Mira Costa’s 75. Saturday’s win marks the first time in six years a

Harbor girls cross country team has won an invitational, Newport

Coach Eric Tweit said.

“It was a good race, especially when we only have one senior and

four freshmen running,” Tweit said.

Senior Lauren Paul finished third overall in 18:54 to lead all Tar

runners. She was followed by sophomore Whitney Blue (10th, 20:34) and junior Caitlin Mai (12th, 20:39).

Four freshmen rounded out the Harbor contingent, led by Lauren

Maddox’s 19th-place finish (21:10). Amy Penner placed 30th in 21:47

with Taylor Bryson (37th, 22:14) and Lily Dierkes (49th, 22:46)

following behind.

The Central Park course is one of the slower courses Newport will

run on, so no records were set Saturday, Tweit said.

Newport has a week off before competing against the five other Sea

View League teams in a meet at Irvine Park Oct. 9.

Estancia finishes sixth

* The Estancia High girls cross country team, led by freshman

Janette Abrego, finished sixth out of 17 schools in its division at

the Huntington Beach Invitational Saturday.

Abrego clocked a 20:11, while fellow freshman Sydney Barloon

followed in 16th (20:50). Junior Lucy Leon, who finished 47th

(22:28), senior Diana Castro, who finished 57th (23:41), senior

Fatima Carrasco, who finished 69th (24:11), and Gabby Cox, who

finished 71st (24:18), also competed in the Huntington Beach meet.

McGann sets mark

* Sage Hill School’s Mollie McGann broke a school record in a

girls frosh-soph race by 40 seconds with a 20:37, good for 12th place

at the Dana Hills Invitational Saturday. Erica Faris placed 44th with

a 22:14 in the same race to highlight Sage’s girls runners.

Sage Hill faces Capistrano Valley Christian in an Academy League

dual meet at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Mason Park in Irvine.
