Costa Mesa High product Sharon Day, a freshman at Cal Poly San Luis

Obispo, has scored four goals, tied for the team lead, and added two

assists to help the women’s soccer team to a 9-1 start.

Day’s 10 points rank second on to freshman Kelsey Carroll’s 12

(four goals and four assists) for a Mustang squad ranked No. 21 in

one national poll.

A 2-0 loss to Santa Clara Sunday ended the Mustangs’ unbeaten

start, which is the best since the program began playing in Division

I.

Cal Poly visits UC Irvine Friday at 7 p.m. for a Big West

Conference clash, then plays at Long Beach State Sunday.

Locals aid Cal upset

* FOOTBALL: Three Newport-Mesa products helped the Cal Golden

Bears upset No. 3-ranked USC in a Pac-10 football clash Saturday at

Cal.

Vince Strang, a 5-foot-8, 140-pound senior receiver out of Orange

Coast College, returned three punts for 29 yards, including a

17-yarder against the Trojans and also carried one time for 4 yards.

He has 10 receptions for 137 yards and two touchdowns this fall and

has also returned one punt for a TD.

Sophomore starting fullback Chris Manderino, a former Newport-Mesa

MVP at Newport Harbor High, had one reception for 5 yards Saturday to

up his season total to six catches for 48 yards. Primarily utilized

as a blocker, the 6-1, 230-pounder has 8 rushing yards on three

attempts.

OCC product Brandon Hall, a 6-4, 245-pound senior tight end, has

five catches for 32 yards and one TD this fall.

Saturday’s win evened Cal’s record at 3-3.

Anteaters blank Nevada

* SOCCER: Freshman goalkeeper Marissa Welliver posted her sixth

shutout of the season as the UC Irvine women’s soccer team defeated

visiting Nevada, 3-0, Sunday.

Sophomore Lindsay Duke, freshman Britney Webster and sophomore Kim

Lloyd all scored for the Anteaters (6-2-2), who open Big West

Conference play Friday night against visiting Cal Poly San Luis

Obispo.

Bruins knock off UCI

* WATER POLO: The UC Irvine men’s water polo team, ranked No. 9,

lost to No. 7 UCLA, 12-8, in a nonconference game Sunday at UCLA.

The Bruins, who received two goals from former Corona del Mar High

standout Michael March and one from former Newport Harbor High star

Peter Belden, outscored UCI, 4-1, in the first period and never

looked back.

Dan Noon paced the Anteaters (5-6) with five goals.

UCLA improved to 5-3.

UCI men finish seventh

* CROSS COUNTRY: The UC Irvine men’s cross country team finished

seventh out of 22 teams and the UCI women were ninth out of 26

schools at the 30th annual Stanford invitational Sunday at the

Stanford golf course.

The UCI men were led by sophomore Ricky Barnes, who finished 28th

in 25:00. Tom Whelan (42nd in 25:24), Brandon Lucero (60th in 25:52),

John Kluve (71st in 26:03) and David Santos (73rd in 26:09) also

contributed for the Anteaters.

Junior Kaleena Yee was the top UCI women’s finisher (47th in

22:44), while Tessa Cendejas (52nd in 22:5), Chelsey Traylor (57th in

23:04), Kim Ramirez (62nd in 23:11) and Jenna Keith (63rd in 23:12)

were additional standouts for the Anteaters.

Stanford won the men’s title and UCLA the women’s.

Mustangs finish fifth

* WATER POLO: The Costa Mesa High boys water polo team won two

games and finished fifth in the Magnolia Tournament Saturday.

The Mustangs (5-4) defeated Gahr, 11-7, in the fifth-place final.

Kyle Thorsness scored six goals, just as he did in the previous game,

a 15-2 victory over Lakewood.

Brian Tipton scored four goals, while Evan Spencer and Brian Knox

added three goals each on the day.

Chargers top Lightning

* TENNIS: Alle Hsu and Sarah Geocaris each won two singles sets

for the Sage Hill School girls tennis team, but visiting Edison High

earned a 12-6 nonleague victory Friday at Park Newport.

Carrisa Cummings and Rachel Heyler, along with Sage’s No. 1

doubles team of Jessica Tsoong and Sarah Flynn, each won one set for

the Lightning (5-2, 3-0 in the Academy League).
