UCI cruises past Cal Baptist
Senior Phil Garcia scored a career-high five goals and junior Dan
Noon added four as No. 9 UC Irvine topped 19th-ranked Cal Baptist,
17-5, in nonconference men’s water polo action at the Anteater
Aquatics Complex Wednesday night.
Juniors Rick Merlo and Cameron Bassett added three and two goals,
respectively, as the Anteaters improved to 6-6 overall. UCI, led by
two goals from Garcia, jumped out to a 4-0 lead and never trailed in
the game.
The Anteaters led 8-3 at halftime and scored five unanswered goals
in the fourth quarter.
Sophomore goalie Joe Wynne had seven saves for UCI while junior
Mike Riegelmann had three stops for the Lancers.
Sailors’ duo not enough
* GOLF: Sophomore Natalie Draganza and junior Kayleigh Horn shot
5-over-par 39 to earn two-thirds of the medalist honors, but it
wasn’t enough for Newport Harbor High to avert a 211-222 nonleague girls golf loss to Esperanza Wednesday at Santa Ana Country Club.
VU honors Hutton
* SOCCER: Vanguard University freshman Heather Hutton has been
named Lion of the Week by the school, the second straight freshman
women’s soccer player so honored.
Hutton helped the Lions record four straight wins, all by shutout,
the past two weeks.
Last week, Vanguard defeated Region II opponents Cal State
Monterey Bay, 1-0, and Bethany College, 6-0.
OCC loses first conference match
* GOLF: Orange Coast College’s women’s golf team lost its first
Orange Empire Conference match Wednesday, falling to Saddleback,
312-371, at the par-72 Tijeras Creek Golf Club in Rancho Santa
Margarita.
Lorraine Fernando led the Pirates (8-6, 4-1 in conference) with an
88 followed by a 93 from Joanne Durocher. Laura Sumpter and Ashlee
Kendall each shot 95. OCC’s Nicole Newbrough shot 98 to break 100 for
the first time, but her score didn’t count in the final tally.
McKitterick leads CdM
* GOLF: Corona del Mar High sophomore Katie McKitterick shot 44 to
lead all scorers as the Sea Kings’ girls golf team defeated Laguna
Beach, 242-277, in a Pacific Coast League match Wednesday on the
par-36 Creek course at the Aliso Viejo Golf Club.
Caitlin McDonald followed with a 45 with Katie Albright (47),
Jonna Kim (52) and Maggie Nelson scoring for CdM (5-3, 2-0 in
league).
DeHaas paces Lions
* VOLLEYBALL: The Vanguard women’s volleyball team defeated Cal
Baptist, 30-21, 30-22, 30-15, Tuesday night in Riverside as the
visiting Lions improved to 3-4 in the Golden State Athletic
Conference.
VU sophomore Keri DeHaas paced the offense with 11 kills and
freshman Kelli Whittaker added eight.
Senior libero Lindsay Kaiser picked up 15 digs against the Lancer
attackers, and setter Marissa Cothran tallied 32 assists.
Hess scores all 4 goals
in Vanguard shutout
* SOCCER: Matt Hess scored all four Vanguard goals Tuesday to give
the Lions a 4-0 victory over Christian Heritage and their third
straight win.
Hess, VU’s leading scorer, has scored 11 goals in the last three
games, bringing his season total to 20.
