Surfside Sports celebrates the beginning of snowboard season each
year with carnival games, special appearances by professional
snowboarders, music, food, drinks and a huge raffle. Thousands of
snowboarding enthusiasts come to participate in the raffle to win
prizes such as snowboards, boots, bindings and lift tickets. It’s
also a great time to find bargains on last year’s snowboarding
equipment and discounts on 2004 gear. Proceeds from games will go
toward local charities, and the Newport Harbor High School’s Surf
Team. The store will open at 8 a.m. It is at 112 23rd St. in Newport
Beach. Call (949) 675-2855 or fax (949) 675-8983.

McDonald, free food and prizes, a live KROQ-FM (106.7) radio
broadcast and a bike raffle. New additions to the restaurant are a

IT’S IN THE BAG
Judith Leiber celebrates 40 years designing extravagant jeweled
purses and accessories. First ladies bring Judith Leiber handbags to
presidential inaugurations, celebrities carry them at awards shows,
and they’re in permanent collections at the Smithsonian Institution
and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. The bags are
collectible art objects and cost from $970 to $5,200. Day bags are
made from exotic skins, rich leathers and suede. Evening bags are
adorned with thousands of Austrian crystals, and clasps and frame
bars can have semi-precious stones. One bag can take two weeks to
complete. Minaudieres (jeweled boxes) come in fun shapes: hearts,
frogs, pigs, penguins, eggplants and more. Hand-signed monogrammed
anniversary bags are available through December. Judith Leiber, from
Budapest, Hungary, learned her craft during World War II. She was the
only woman accepted into the handbag guild. Leiber started her
handbag business in New York. Now her pieces are one of the last
handmade luxury items made in the U.S. Other accessories made include
belts, pill boxes, accessories and recently introduced eyeglasses and
footwear. Level One, Nordstrom wing at South Coast Plaza. Visit
