James J. Gillis, born and raised in Huntington Beach, received the

Harvey G. Foster Award from the University of Notre Dame Alumni Assn.

at halftime of the Washington State game in South Bend, Ind. on Sept.

6. A member of Notre Dame’s class of 1951, Gillis was honored for his

dedication to the enrichment of the Notre Dame family and his

community ... Huntington Beach resident William Yarchin was recently

appointed associate dean of the Department of Religion and Philosophy

at Azusa Pacific University. Yarchin has served as assistant

professor (1983-88), associate professor (1993-2003), professor

(2003-present) and chair (1995-2003). In his new role as associate

dean, Yarchin plans and manages the division’s budget, curriculum,

recruitment and retention, and faculty and staff development. He also

serves as a liaison between the undergraduate and graduate components

of the Haggard School of Theology.
