Marketplace celebrates anniversary

The Orange County Marketplace is celebrating the start of its 35th

year this weekend.

Weekend festivities include free birthday cake for all swap meet

shoppers, a free 35th anniversary coupon booklet filled with

discounts, promotions and complimentary passes throughout the year

and musical entertainment.

The Marketplace is at the Orange County Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa

on the weekends from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Sister city students arrive in Newport

Six students from Okazaki, Japan, a sister city of Newport Beach,

arrived in town Thursday.

The four two boys and two girls will be staying with local

families until Wednesday. Today, they attend a welcome rally at

Corona del Mar High School.

During their visit, they will go on a harbor tour, canoe in the

bay, visit the school board and attend a barbecue put on by the

Newport Beach Rotary Club.

Okazaki is in central Japan, between Tokyo and Kyoto.

Child-rearing seminar on tap at library

The Newport Beach Public Library will host “Simple Sanity for

Parents” with Dr. Bunni Tobias, “The Kid’s Detective,” on Oct. 16.

The program was designed as a parent’s guide to raising healthy,

happy children by promoting confidence and responsibility through

competence, Tobias said. It will include an interactive presentation

and provide a forum for attendees to discuss parenting issues.

Tobias, a licensed educational psychologist with more than 30

years experience, created “ADHD Look-Alikes: Other Reasons Children

Flit, Squirm, Distract and Just Space Out.”

The presentation will take place at 7 p.m. Oct. 16 in the Friends

Meeting Room of the Newport Beach Public Library, at 1000 Avocado

Ave.

The event is free and open to the public.

SWAT demonstrations set for Sunday

Live firefighter and SWAT demonstrations will be part of the city

of Newport Beach’s Public Safety Day on Sunday.

The event will include tours of the fire and police stations and

displays from lifeguards, the Harbor Patrol, Red Cross, Orange County

Burn Assn., D.A.R.E. and more.

The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at the

Newport Center Fire Station No. 3, at 868 Santa Barbara Drive in

Newport Center.

Admission to the fire station is free. The demonstration will

begin at noon.
