Sowers’ four goals key Crush’s 6-1 win

Brittany Sowers scored four goals with assists by Margaret Vento,

Jillian Fox, Alex Haskin and Katrina Johnson in the Newport Crush’s

6-1 win over the Costa Mesa Grass Stains in girls under-14 AYSO

Region 97 soccer action Sept. 27.

Vento also added two goals with assists from Sowers and Julie

Thomas.

Newport’s defense featured strong plays from Johnson, Elizabeth

Pratty, Maranda Ruiz, Alex Haskin and Tori Merrick.

Nichole Horlick, Kristen Bassler and Jordan Moy also contributed

to the victory.

In boys under-16 action:

* Newport 2, South Irvine 2:

Striker Isai Viveros leaped and headed the ball over the Irvine

goalkeeper to tie the score 2-2 in the second half.

Both sides threatened several more times, including a near miss on

an indirect penalty kick by Patrick Vhalakis.

Sergio Rodriguez scored the game’s first goal in the first half

before South Irvine responded to take a 2-1 lead at the break.

Danny Gonzalez, Benjamin Pepic and Jeremy Lewis all played strong

defense and goalkeeper Tommy Olson turned away a lofted Irvine kick.

In girls under-12 play:

* Lindsay Ricker, Whitley Peters, Bianca Nasser and goalkeeper

Jasmine Swain kept the Beach Babes’ game scoreless through the first

half.

The offensive surge escalated in the second half with Kiley

Johnson, Kelly Rorden and Maddy Stroch leading the charge.

Rorden tied the game on a penalty kick, but the Beach Babes lost.

London Walker had several solid kicks while Bryn Wensley added

accurate passes. Lindsey Larson and Stephanie Storch provided strong

ball handling and Isabella and Sheyna Holmes led breaks toward the

goal.

In boys under-12 play:

* Raiders 2, Typhoons 1:

Easton Giedt scored on a header off a pass from Matt Vanbergh for

the game-winning goal in the third quarter.

The Typhoons tried to tie it, but Raider goalkeepers Christopher

Mendez and Jordan McLaren turned away several shots. Jack Ahearn and

Kevin Nguyen added strong play.

The Raiders scored first when Vanbergh manuevered between the

Typhoons’ defensive line in the first quarter.

Charlie Massingill and Wyeth Rietveld each made solid plays before

the Typhoons scored from 25 yards out.

The Raiders received aggressive play from Austin Knott, Justin

McLaren and Devin Hovis.

* Black Jacks 2, Avalanche 0:

Matthew Hurst and Wil Curiel scored for the Black Jacks, who

received offensive support from J.D. Vickers and Luke Dawson.

Midfielders Daniel Netzer, Trevor Noon, Kyle Evans, Ryan Andrews

and Casey Bushong kept the Black Jacks in control.

Mathew DiFrancesco, Stephen Denghausen, Kawika Morse and Tyler

Collins held the Avalanche scoreless. Bushong and Kyle Evans shared

goalkeeping duties.

* In girls under-10 action:

Breakers 8, Cougars 2:

Five different Breakers scored, including Alison Hayes and

strikers Meaghan Kay and Christina Young, who all found the net twice

in the first half.

Forwards Robin Young and Casey Duckworth added goals. Duckworth

scored her first goal.

Halfbacks Kari Hancock, Alexandria Chandler and Samantha Small

were instrumental to all goals.

Sweeper Alyson Delbrook, along with fullbacks Katie Calder and

Page Keys, led the defense.

Goalkeepers C. Young and Kay booted balls up field, keeping play

in Cougar territory.

* Fighting Pickles 3, Golden Flames 0:

Madison Grant scored twice and Delaney Bell notched the first goal

of her career in the shutout.

Kaili Brande assisted on one goal and forward Anna Newman led the

offense.

Midfielders Sarah Zomaya and Alise Larsen keyed the midfield with

Hunter Jennings and Madison Kohlenberger anchoring the defense.

In boys under-10 action:

* Silver Wolves 4, Red Hawks 1:

Caleb Candelaria scored twice in the second half and three times

total to pace the Wolves to victory.

Jacob Swain scored a goal over the goalkeeper to break a 1-1 tie

in the third quarter.

Clay Smyth, Casey Shearer and Robert Boullon started the game as

forwards and were backed up by midfielders Eli Gomez and Wyatt

Muller. Nathan Mayhugh, Candelaria and Cameron Candelaria anchored

the defense.

* A.C. Milan 3, Atomic Fireballs 0:

A.C. Milan recorded its second consecutive shutout to remain

undefeated (4-0).

Sam Sykes, Ian Baugh and Landon Gyulay each scored one goal.

Kyle Regan and Jesse Torres provided support at forward with the

midfield led by True Tamplin and Christian Franco.

Nicholas McCann, Charlie Pena, Willie Pyle and Max Johnson shined

on defense.

* The Blue Meteors had two goalkeepers making their first

appearances at the position in their game Adrian Salas and Michael

Reo (two saves) shined in net.

David Vorona and Garrett Keillor controlled the midfield with

forward Ishmael Alkayali booting a few shots on goal.

Forward Cameron Paskerian made numerous touches while Nathan

Fulmizi added a few kicks.

Christopher Selby covered much ground and had some kicks up field

with Daniel Calvillo playing well. Chase Whiting touched the ball

several times as well.

In girls under-8 play:

* Analysa Vivanco scored for the Girls On Fire in its game

Cortlynn Clement performed well in goal in the first period with

support from Reo Nathan and Shelby Slezak.

Berkley Van Oostendorp and Ricky Barton led the defense while

Emily Conant, Clement and Slezak passed well.

In boys under-8 action:

* Eli Botros and Chas Beck scored goals for the Goblins against

the Green Machine.

T.J. Tarazevits, Wil Crook, Jake Farwell, Marc Gehlke and Joey

Gregory all passed and defended well. Goalkeepers Buddy Mitchell and

Andrew Dimas stopped several shots.

In girls under-7 play:

* Libby Knight led the Firecrackers with three second-half goals

while Ryan Moncrief and Miranda Hart each turned away shots while in

goal. Moncrief made six saves in the third quarter.

Defenders Riley Alexander and Reagan Rutter kept the Fireflies at

bay.

The Fireflies’ Delaney Gastineau scored the game’s first goal.

Baylee Kneip moved the ball well for the Fireflies.

Alex Vasquez and Emily Wolfe shared goaltending duties for the

Fireflies.

Annie La Grandeur, Brooke Netzer and Nicole Carlin exhibited

strong footwork while Sierra Page and Bryn Crowell played well at

both ends.

Kira Wandrocke missed two goals by inches and Amanda Brown stopped

many Fireflies’ attacks.

* Mallory Gyulay led the Hula Girls with two goals and Kate Yasko

added one goal to cap the scoring against the Blue Flames

Brittany Welsh and Kierstyn Yardley stopped the ball on several

attempts while MacKenzie Gaddis, Caroline Gels and Gabby Shelley

controlled the ball and played solid defense.

* Toni Holland scored two first-half goals to lead the Blue

Flames.

Tara Hurley made five saves in the third quarter while Haley Burg

stopped two shots during the second quarter.

Sierra Killingsworth added a strong kick.

* Nikki Leal, Emma Erickson, Sammie Yeager and Jaynie Hexberg

scored for the Flaming Flowers against the Pink Panthers while

Daniella Carresse and Camille Christensen led the defense. Leah

Castillo made several saves in goal and Erin Barth played well for

the Panthers.

In boys under-7 action:

* The Orange and Black Tigers fired numerous shots on goal against

the Red and White Super Kids, but the defense turned away all balls.

William Johnson and Thomas Quinn played their best games of the

year along with a solid effort from Jack Binford, who made several

centering passes.

Ryan Braun fired three shots on goal and Baron Davis played well

offensively and defensively.

Griffith Clawson played well in goal with Landon Knight adding

strong defense.

David Hartman intercepted several passes to hold off the Super

Kids.

In girls under-6 action:

* Rianna Reimers scored and assisted her teammates for the Green

Gators in their game against the Cherry Bombs.

Kate Hefner and Dax McGill each played well on both offense and

defense while Sienna Keillor added a goal for the Gators.

Amanda Moore made solid passes to teammates.

Paige Tamblyn, Jaqi Defeo and Emma Valenski starred on offense for

the Cherry Bombs with Megan Keys and Gigi Woodall adding steals.

* Maxine Aiello, Lauren Bibb and Kendall Cosenza led scoring

chances for the Ladybugs against the Dragonflies

Claire Johnson, Callie Govaars, Marley Mais and Elle Zielinski all

had key assists.

* Sonja Spencer scored her first goal of the year to lead the

Dolphins against the Red Rockin’ Flames.

Brittany Woolsey, Lindzy Konrad and MacKenzie Mowery supported the

offense while London Davis and Savannah Boyd teamed up on defense.

* Audrey Reed scored the first of her seven goals in the second

quarter for the Blue Dolphins, who received assists from Carly Van

Oostendorp, Naci Johnson, Kelly McFetters and Haley Martinez.

In boys under-6 play:

* R.J. Reid celebrated his sixth birthday by scoring a goal for

the Blue Sharks against the Yellow Sharks.

Spike Stoneman and Kevon Andonian displayed strong blocking while

Cade Clement and Jake Van Herwaarden hustled.

Hunter Ficenec, Corbin Joyce, Kyle Moran and Ryan Young had many

shots on goal for the Yellow Sharks, but the Blue Sharks’ defense of

Shane Mitchell and Dillon Murphy was strong.
