The Laguna Beach High boys’ cross country team recorded a big victory

on the road as it defeated Pacific Coast League favorite Corona del

Mar, 23-33, on the Sea Kings’ home course.

Laguna came into the key league matchup ranked sixth in the latest

CIF Division IV poll; Corona del Mar was No. 10 in Division III.

The Breakers were led by the one-two finish of junior Sean Fuszard

and sophomore Max Mullender.

Fuszard won the race in 16:03 while Mullender finished in 16:06.

“This was a big, early season upset win for us,” Laguna Coach Dave

Brobeck said.

In girls’ cross country, Laguna’s third-ranked squad garnered a

second-place finish in the Division 4 race at the highly-competitive

Bell-Jeff Invitational in Los Angeles.

“This was an excellent performance for our squad, proving that we

deserve our high ranking in CIF Southern Section,” Brobeck said.

In girls’ tennis, Laguna ran its record to a perfect 6-0 Tuesday

with a 14-4 rout of visiting Newport Beach in nonleague action.

The Breakers’ Nos. 1 and 2 singles players, Claire Rietsch and

Loren Butterwick, swept their opponents.

In boys’ water polo, Laguna opened the South Coast Tournament with

a 12-11 upset of Marina.

Ryan Fair’s pass set up Mike Dick’s game-winning goal as the

Breakers won for the third time in four matches this season.

Nima Mortazavi led Laguna with six goals.

Laguna, however, was later defeated in tournament play by El Toro,

14-5, Riverside Poly, 11-9, and Santa Barbara, 16-14.

In the latest CIF Southern Section fall sports rankings, four

Laguna teams are ranked in various Top 10 polls: the girls’ tennis

team is No. 3 in Division I, the boys’ and girls’ cross country teams

each is No. 6 in Division IV and the girls’ volleyball squad is No. 3

in the Division IVAA poll.
