JIM DE BOOM

Grab the family, hop in the car and drive to the new Balboa Village

on Balboa Peninsula between 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today and Sunday for La

Strada dell’ Arte, a festival of artists, entertainers and Italian

restaurants.

The main feature will be chalk artists, some 30 in number, who

will be making their creations on the black top Washington Street.

Other artists will be exhibiting their art on Main Street. The Plazza

de Bambini will be an area for your children to try their hands at

chalk art on the street.

There will be $5 gondola rides, mimes, dancers, Italian singers,

Renaissance battle reenactments, an Italian wine and beer garden, and

a Ristorante dell’ Arte with seven Newport Beach restaurants selling

tastes of their food.

The event is sponsored in part by the Olive Garden, the Daily

Pilot and the Los Angeles Times, to name a few, for the benefit of

the Newport Harbor Nautical Museum.

CASINO NIGHT COMING

The Harbor Mesa Lions’ seventh annual Viva Las Vegas casino night

fund-raiser will be held on Friday, Oct. 24, at the Costa Mesa

Neighborhood Community Center. The event will feature dinner by the

Newport Rib Company, a deejay, dancing, a silent auction and gaming

tables.

Tickets cost $30 and cover one drink ticket and $100 in playing

money. All funds raised will go to local charities and the Lions

Sight & Hearing Foundation. For information, call (714) 641-0664 or

(714) 545-6126.

MAKE A DIFFERENCE DAY

What are you going to do on Saturday, Oct. 25, to make a

difference?

Created by USA WEEKEND magazine, Make A Difference Day is an

annual program that takes place on the fourth Saturday of October.

Make A Difference Day inspires and rewards volunteers by publicizing

their efforts.

For more information on Make a Difference Day or to enter your

club’s volunteer efforts visit https://www.usaweekend.com/

GOING ON LINE

John Willis, editor of the Sons of the American Legion Chowline,

says in the October issue to their members:

“We all know the Internet is a bundle of information. But, did you

know that you could access this publication and the Seabreeze on the

Internet? Well, you can -- just go to https://www. al291.org. You will

find lots of great info and links to even more interesting sites. For

example, the Seabreeze has a captivating story from [World War II] on

the cover -- a must read.

“If you have e-mail capability you can receive this newsletter

before the mail, by providing your e-mail address to Jeff Kingsley at

kingfeet@primenet.com. The money we save on printing and postage will

go to charity projects instead. Currently, we are mailing out around

350 hard copies.”

FIND ANYTHING ONLINE

Andrew Pomeroy of Creative Continuum will present “Finding

Anything Online” to a meeting of Computer Friends of Oasis on

Wednesday at the Oasis Senior Center.

Pomeroy is senior support technician of a major multinational

manufacturing firm and is directly responsible for more than 300

computer systems, support, training and systems evaluation. He is

also the lead programmer for My Life Story, an initiative to find an

easy way to help people record their memoirs. Pomeroy’s repertoire

includes Web development, business development and marketing

research, and he has written two books on search engines and

genealogy.

The meeting begins at 1 p.m. with a question and answer session in

the Multipurpose Room. The Oasis Center is at the corner of

Marguerite Avenue and 5th Street in Corona del Mar. A $3 fee is

charged for visitors who are not members of Computer Friends.

POST-ELECTION ANALYSIS

Assemblyman John Campbell will provide an analysis of the Oct. 7

recall election at a special luncheon meeting of the Orange County

Coast Assn. being held at noon Tuesday, Oct. 14, at the Newport

Harbor Nautical Museum.

Campbell, the leading Assembly Republican in the budget

negotiations, will also provide an update on the recent legislative

session. Lunch is $20 for members, $22 for guests. Reservations can

WORTH REPEATING

From the Thought for the Day provided by Greg Kelley of the
