UCI hosts Midnight Magic Friday

The UC Irvine men’s and women’s basketball teams will be previewed

Friday night during “Midnight Magic 2003” in the Bren Events Center.

The doors will open at 10:30 p.m. with free food, prizes and

music.

At midnight, the men’s and women’s players and coaches will be

introduced. Activities will include a slam-dunk contest, a

three-point shootout between the men’s and women’s teams, and

scrimmages.

UCI officials expect more than 2,000 to attend.

The UCI men’s team features three returning starters from last

year’s 20-9 squad. Senior center Adam Parada averaged 12.2 points and

6.2 rebounds, sophomore guard Jeff Gloger averaged 8.2 points and was

14th in the nation in steals per game at 2.6, and senior forward

Stanislav Zuzak averaged 7.9 points.

Parada was a second-team All-Big West Conference selection and

Gloger was named to the conference’s All-Freshmen squad.

Coach Pat Douglass’ Anteaters have had three consecutive 20-win

seasons for the first time in school history.

Senior forward Christina Callaway, a second-team All-Big West

choice last season, led the women’s team in rebounding at 7.8 boards

per game and averaged 12.8 points.

Senior guard Kristen Green, who averaged 10.8 points and 5.7

rebounds, received honorable mention for Big West honors last season.

Sophomore center Lauren Yadon was selected to the Big West

All-Freshmen team after averaging 9.8 points and 5.5 rebounds.

Coach Mark Adams’ Anteaters finished 17-12 in 2002-03, UCI’s most

wins since the 1994-95 season.

Gauchos honor locals

* HONORS: A pair of athletes with local ties are among 33 former

Saddleback College standouts scheduled to be inducted in the school’s

Hall of Fame Saturday.

John Cappello, a former tennis standout at Corona del Mar High,

and Selby Schriber, a six-time women’s club champion golfer at Big

Canyon Country Club and the inaugural winner of the Tea Cup classic

in 1997, are among those set to be honored during pregame and

halftime ceremonies of the Gauchos’ homecoming football game against

Santa Ana, that kicks off at 5 p.m.

A pregame barbecue is scheduled for 3:30 p.m., with halftime

ceremonies expected to take place around 6:15 p.m.

The 33-member class completed their two-year careers between the

fall of 1998 and the spring of 2000.

Cappello played men’s tennis at Saddleback and Schriber competed

for the Gauchos in women’s golf.
