Tigers booted by Pirates

Steve Vellanoweth, Matt Fennell and Joel Sotolongo scored one goal

each to lead the Orange Coast College men’s soccer team to a 3-1

Orange Empire Conference victory over host Riverside Tuesday.

The Pirates, who led 3-0 before Riverside scored, improved to

7-3-1, 4-1-1 in the OEC.

OCC ties Riverside

* SOCCER: The Orange Coast College women’s soccer team settled

for a 1-1 tie with Orange Empire Conference visitor Riverside. The

Pirates (5-4-1, 4-3-1 in conference) trailed, 1-0, two minutes into

the first half, but knotted the score, two minutes later when Emily

Prather scored.

UCI finishes 10th

* GOLF: The UC Irvine men’s golf team tied for 10th place out of

16 teams in the Alister MacKenzie Invitational at The Meadow Club in

Fairfax.

Host California, No. 14 in Golfweek’s latest national rankings,

won the 54-hole tournament with a total of 833. UCI freshman Neno

Boonyaplanun finished 26th at 1-over 214 (69-73-72), followed by

teammates Jay Choe at 216, Vinnie Poncino at 218, Ryne Rindfleisch at

223 and Will Park at 227.

CdM stuns T-Wolves

* GOLF: The Corona del Mar girls golf team defeated Northwood,

235-248, at Newport Beach CC, marking the first time the Sea Kings

have beaten the Timberwolves in Pacific Coast League play.

Veronica Friedman shot 45 on the par-35 course, while Katie

Albright and Katie McKitterick both had 46. Maggie Nelson (48) and

Jonna Kim (50) also contributed, as CdM improved to 9-3, 5-0 in

league, and Northwood dropped to 3-1 in the PCL.

Eagles fall to Saints

* WATER POLO: Visiting Santa Ana scored five second-quarter goals

to pave the way for a 10-6 Golden West League boys water polo victory

over Estancia.

Richard McElveny and Paul Collier each scored two goals for the

Eagles (5-9, 0-3 in league) while Anthony Hermann and Chad Kunert

each added one. Nathan Marsteller made 14 saves.

Woodbridge tames Tars

* GOLF: Newport Harbor sophomore Natalie Draganza earned medalist

honors with a 37, but that was about the only bright spot for the

Sailors as they dropped a Sea View League girls golf match to

Woodbridge, 222-238, on the par-36 Rancho San Joaquin Golf Course in

Irvine.

Kayleigh Horn (41), Katie McKay (53), Erin Callahan (53) and

Ashley Jacobs (54) rounded out the top five for Newport (4-7, 0-3 in

league).
