Sea Kings girls golf team edges Sailors

It was a typical Back Bay rivalry affair, as the Corona del Mar High

girls golf team eked past Newport Harbor, 225-230, in a nonleague

match at Santa Ana Country Club Wednesday.

Natalie Draganza was the medalist, shooting 1-over par-35 for the

Sailors (4-8). The Sea Kings (10-3) were led by Katie McKitterick,

who shot 4-over, while Katie Albright (43), Maggie Nelson (44),

Veronica Friedman (46) and Caitlin McDonald (53) also contributed to

the win.

Kayleigh Horn (43), Marissa Zehnder (50), Erin Callahan (50) and

Katie McKay (51) scored for Newport Harbor.

Eagles edge Vanguard

* SOCCER: Amber Cappello scored in overtime to lead Concordia

University to a 1-0 Golden State Athletic Conference women’s soccer

win Wednesday over visiting Vanguard.

Kim Belcher had 12 saves for the Lions, who fell to 8-5, 3-2 in

conference.

Concordia improved to 7-4-3, 4-0-1.

Mesa beat by Breakers

* GOLF: Jean You shot 7-over-par 42, but the Costa Mesa High girls

golf team lost, 293-257, to Laguna Beach in nonleague action at the

Aliso Creek Golf Club Wednesday.

Rachel Hughes (49) and Teresa Stephens (65) also contributed for

the Mustangs (1-5).

Sailors trounce Aliso

* WATER POLO: Michael Bury scored seven goals to lead the Newport

Harbor High boys water polo team to a 16-7 Sea View League victory at

Aliso Niguel Wednesday.

Michael Robinson made seven saves to help the Sailors’ cause.

Tars topple University

* TENNIS: Vanessa Dunlap swept in singles and A.J. Olson and Diana

Khoury did the same in doubles to lead the Newport Harbor High girls

tennis team to a 13-5 nonleague victory over visiting University

Wednesday.

Chrissy Schwartz overcame four match points to win, 7-5, in

singles, and also helped the Sailors improve to 8-4.

OCC hammers Cypress

* WATER POLO: Katie Phorness and Brittany Kane scored four goals

each to lead the Orange Coast College women’s water polo team to a

16-3 Orange Empire Conference victory over visiting Cypress

Wednesday.

Sara Natalizio added three goals, while Courtney Robertson

provided two, and Mary Stashak, Kim Doll and Alexa Miller contributed

one apiece for the Pirates.

Pirates pummel Hornets

* GOLF: Orange Coast College women’s golfer Lorraine Fernando was

medalist with a 9-over-par 83 to lead the Pirates to a 359-452 Orange

Empire Conference victory over Fullerton at Alta Vista Country Club

Wednesday.

Joanne Durocher (90), Megan Parkovich (93) and Ashlee Kendall (93)

also helped OCC improve to 11-8, 7-3 in conference.

Anteater men tumble

* SOCCER: Cal State Northridge scored three second-half goals

Wednesday night to defeat host UC Irvine, 4-1, in Big West Conference

men’s soccer action. UCI’s Sebastian Galmarini scored in the 65th

minute to tie the match, 1-1, on Chris Ruiz’s assist, but Northridge

(7-1-2, 1-0-1 in the Big West) scored three times to pull away. The

‘Eaters fell to 3-8, 0-1.

Towersey bows out

* GOLF: Newport Beach resident Marianne Towersey lost to defending

champion Kathy Hartwiger, 5 and 4, in the second round of match play

in the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur golf championship Tuesday at Long

Cove Club in Hilton Head, S.C.

Towersey, a five-time winner of the Tea Cup Classic, shot

consecutive 78s in the first two rounds of stroke play before

defeating Lesley Stracks of Washington D.C., 3 and 2, Monday.

Hartwiger advanced to the third round of match play, but her dream

of repeating as champion crumbled when Shannon Ogg of Charlotte,

N.C., defeated her in 21 holes, advancing to the quarterfinals.

Chiboucas leads Sage

* CROSS COUNTRY: The Sage Hill School boys cross country team won,

but the girls team lost to Whitney in an Academy League meet Tuesday

at Mason Park in Irvine.

The boys won, 21-34, on the legs of first-place runner Chris

Chiboucas (17:05). He was followed by Zach Chandy (third, 17:23), Tim

Lefler (fourth, 17:33), Mike Voge (sixth, 17:39) and Tristan Cordier

(seventh, 17:42) in the top 10 for Sage Hill (4-1, 3-0 in league).

The Sage girls lost, 23-36, but received strong efforts from

Mollie McGann (second, 20:57), Kara Percival (fifth, 21:33) and Erica

Faris (sixth, 21:37).

Sea Lions best Vanguard

* VOLLEYBALL: Visiting Point Loma Nazarene dealt Vanguard

University’s women’s volleyball team a 30-20, 30-24, 26-30, 30-19

loss in Golden State Athletic Conference play Tuesday. The

fourth-ranked Sea Lions improved to 18-1, 10-1 in the conference,

while Vanguard dropped to 10-7, 4-7. Jaclyn Lee led the Lions with 14

kills while Kelli Whittaker slammed 12. Marissa Cothran recorded 37

assists with Keri DeHaas and Lindsay Kaiser each amassed 16 digs for

Vanguard.

VU recognizes Thune

* HONORS: Vanguard University junior Jenny Thune, who finished

fourth among 157 women’s cross country runners at the Vanguard

Invitational Saturday and has led the Lions in their first four

races, has been named Lion of the Week by the school.

Thune’s time of 18:52 Saturday was 25 seconds better than her mark

a year ago on the same course and was just 33 seconds behind the

winner, who set a new course record.

Thune was also only 16 seconds off her personal-record time of

18:36. posted in September in Oregon.

The Lions finished seventh out of 14 teams Saturday.

Thune has bettered the 19:00 mark in three of four races thus far.

She ran faster than 19:00 only once as a sophomore, when she was an

All-Golden State Athletic Conference performer.
