Corona del Mar remains atop PCL standings

Corona del Mar High’s girls volleyball team maintained its perfect

Pacific Coast League record with a 25-8, 25-21, 25-14 win over host Calvary Chapel Thursday.

Junior middle blocker Lindsey Ensign slammed 15 kills while Jordan

Smith and Lauren Snell each had six for the Sea Kings (13-6, 3-0 in

league), which led from start to finish. Smith and Snell led in digs

with eight and six, respectively.

Ashley Bill and Traci Lawson each tallied eight assists for CdM,

ranked second in CIF Southern Section Division III-A.

CdM travels to Northwood (12-4, 3-0), No. 1 in Division III-AA, in

a key league match at 5:30 p.m. Monday.

Sailors ground Hawks

* VOLLEYBALL: Newport Harbor High’s girls volleyball team welcomed

back senior setter Kellie King with a 25-11, 25-22, 25-22 Sea View

League victory over host Laguna Hills Thursday.

King, who didn’t play in a three-game win over Irvine Tuesday,

tallied 12 assists and three digs in limited action Thursday while

still nursing a torn ligament in her right middle finger.

“It will probably hurt her all season and we put her in the back

row so she couldn’t hurt it more on a block or anything like that,”

Newport Coach Dan Glenn said. “She did a good job.”

Glenn also offered praise to key serving by Kiley Hall and Lauren

Miller, who had five and four ace serves, respectively.

Hall added four kills while Miller and Taryn Tarnutzer each

slammed six kills for Newport (11-4, 4-0 in league). Senior Alyson

Jennings had a team-high 17 assists and five digs.

The Sailors, No. 2 in CIF Southern Section Division II-AA, will

host Woodbridge (9-9, 3-1), ranked seventh in Division II-A, at 5:15

p.m. Tuesday in a key league match.

Jorth, Bury led Tars

* WATER POLO: Five goals apiece for Clay Jorth and Michael Bury

led the Newport Harbor High boys water polo team in its 14-9

nonleague victory over host Laguna Beach Thursday.

Nima Mortazan scored five goals for the Breakers (8-9). Newport

goalkeeper Michael Robinson made 12 saves and two steals. Brett Auer

scored twice for the Sailors (8-7) with single goals coming from

Griffin Gentry and Andrew Belden.

Sean McGhie and Jorth each had two assists while Morgan Laidlaw,

Bury and Carson Hill tallied one assist apiece.

Mustangs rout Lobos

* WATER POLO: Costa Mesa High senior Brian Tipton scored eight

goals to lead the Mustangs to a 21-3 nonleague boys water polo

victory over visiting Los Amigos Thursday.

Sophomore Kyle Thorsness added six goals and junior Evan Spencer

had five for the Mustangs, who improved to 10-5.

Mesa junior goalie Matt Jaroslawski made nine saves.

Los Amigos fell to 7-6.

Sage swings past Orange

* GOLF: Senior Chelsea Vayner and freshman Emma Koh shared

medalist honors, shooting 50 and leading the Sage Hill School girls

golf team to a 271-326 Golden West League victory over Orange at

River View on Thursday.

Freshman Natalie Kraft (52), sophomore Michelle Liberman (58),

junior Megan McGillivray (61) also contributed for the Lightning

(6-5, 3-3 in league). Orange dropped to 0-6 in league.

Vayner shot for par on the final hole to tie with Koh, who double

bogeyed to finish at 50. Vayner has averaged 48 over the past three

rounds, Sage Hill Coach Eric Gnagy said.
