CdM topples T-wolves

* Corona del Mar High’s girls tennis team tuned up for its match

against Laguna Beach next week with a 16-2 Pacific Coast League

victory over visiting Northwood Thursday.

Freshman Jill Damion, playing at No. 1 singles for the first time

this year, won two sets while Brittany Holland lost just one game for

CdM (7-4, 4-1 in league).

Jackie Manning and partner Miranda Young, along with the duo of

Jillian Braverman and Hayley Young, each swept in doubles for the Sea

Kings, ranked sixth in CIF Southern Section Division I.

Rachel Miller and Courtney Carnahan claimed two doubles sets while

Kelly McKitterick, Michelle Atkins and Amanda Rubenstein each won one

set.

Senior Juliette Mutzke and junior Jami Steele didn’t play

Thursday.

Mutzke has battled a sore ankle and is recovering from the flu

while Steele spent four days in the hospital with a viral infection,

CdM Coach Scott Feichter said. Steele should start hitting balls

today, he said.

Both are questionable for Tuesday’s league match against visiting

Laguna Beach, ranked third in Division I, which defeated CdM, 10-8,

two weeks ago.

“I hope [Mutzke] is ready, she is our linchpin in doubles,”

Feichter said. “But I only want her to play if she is healthy. I

don’t want her to relapse.”

CdM would take an inside track to the league championship and gain

valuable standing for the CIF playoffs with a win against Laguna.

“We need 11 [games] to beat them outright, anything less than that

and they win league,” Feichter said. “And we don’t want to get stuck

with Peninsula or Calabasas early [in the CIF playoffs].”

Calabasas is ranked first in Division I while Peninsula is fourth.
