Newport architect arrested for forgery

Andrew Goetz, an architect who does extensive work within the city,

was arrested Wednesday for allegedly forging building plans submitted

to City Hall.

Goetz was released Wednesday on $10,000 bail, Newport Beach Police

Detective Keith Krallman said.

Police declined to give further details of the suspected forgery,

pending further investigation into Goetz’s work in the city. City

Hall officials confirmed that the plans Goetz is accused of forging

were for a private Newport Beach residence designed by Goetz.

Goetz’s attorney, Paul Ultimo, said there was no substance to the

accusations because the plans Goetz submitted to the city were

interim plans.

“This was not a final set of plans,” Ultimo said. “I’ve reviewed

the documents and blueprints, and there is neither fraud nor any

intent to commit fraud here.”

Ultimo said his client will plead not guilty if charged.

Goetz does a brisk business in the city. Building Department

Director Jay Elbettar estimated that Goetz has submitted plans for 10

to 15 homes here in the last year. Elbettar said that his department

will check past plans as a precaution.

“We’re just looking to see if there are any anomalies,” Elbettar

said.

Goetz is principal of Goetz & Associates in Newport Center.

Police said they will investigate more before pursuing charges

through the district attorney’s office.
