The Laguna Beach High girls’ volleyball team won its Pacific Coast

League opener Tuesday as it swept host in a tight match, Calvary

Chapel, 26-24, 25-23, 31-29.

Junior outside hitter Blakely Burns paced the Breakers with 16

kills and 14 digs.

Junior setter Joy Henderson finished with 33 assists.

“We played just well enough to win,” Laguna Coach Lance Stewart

said. “We’ve got to continue to get a little better at every

practice, in every match. If we get into the playoffs, I think this

team can do some damage.”

In girls’ tennis, unbeaten Laguna won its 11th game of the season

with a 15-3 decision over host Tesoro Tuesday.

The Breakers doubles teams of No. 1 Claire Rietsch/Correy Miller,

No. 2 Addison Doud/Lauren Thigpen and No. 3 Briton Simons/Kim Ochwat

swept their Titan opponents.

In a previous league match, the Breakers routed rival Calvary

Chapel, 17-1.

Laguna also stepped out of league competition to take on county

power Troy and emerged with an 11-7 road victory.

Two Laguna doubles teams -- No. 1 Correy Miller/Katie Ochwat and

No. 2 Jackie Reed/Briton Simons -- earned sweeps against the

Warriors.

In boys’ water polo, Laguna dropped a tough, 12-11 PCL match to

rival Corona del Mar. The Breakers’ nonleague match scheduled for

Monday against San Clemente was canceled.

In this week’s CIF-Southern Section rankings, Laguna’s girls’

tennis team was ranked second behind top-ranked Calabasas in the

Division I poll.

The Breakers’ girls’ volleyball team is ranked sixth in Division

IV-AA and the girls’ and boys’ cross country teams each is ranked No.

3 in Division IV.
