Faith community gets ready to walk

Hundreds of members of more than two dozen congregations from Costa

Mesa, Irvine and Newport Beach will walk on Sunday, Oct. 26, in the

15th annual United Interfaith Hunger Walk, presented by Wahoo’s Fish

Taco, which starts and ends at St. Mark Presbyterian Church in

Newport Beach.

Registration will begin at 1 p.m., and the 5K walk along the

beautiful Upper Newport Bay with your neighbors begins at 1:30 p.m.

More than 350 walkers are expected to raise more than $35,000,

which is split between local and international hunger relief

organizations, said Bob Johnston, walk co-chair and a member of Our

Lady Queen of Angels Catholic Church.

“It’s a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon with family and

friends while getting exercise and helping to solve the problem of

hunger for many people,” said Dennis Short, minister at Harbor

Christian Church and president of the Newport Mesa Irvine Interfaith

Council.

Local agencies receiving funds include Share Our Selves, Jewish

Family Services, F.I.S.H., Orange County Interfaith Shelter and the

Catholic Worker. If you don’t want to walk, you can work the walk,

Craig Rodewald said, adding they are always looking for more people

to lend a hand on Walk Day.

A SISTER CLUB VISITS

Thirteen members of the Okazaki South Rotary Club will be visiting

Newport Beach Tuesday through Thursday, hosted by members of their

sister club, the Newport-Balboa Rotary Club.

A welcoming reception is planned for Tuesday night at the home of

club president Ed Rennie.

On Wednesday, they will be off to the Environment Nature Center

for a presentation by Bo Glover on the Butterfly Building and then to

Irvine Terrace Park, where the Wendell Fish and Moe Hamill memorial

benches are.

After that, they’ll get a tour of the Central Library and Sherman

Gardens and a boat tour of Newport Harbor. They’ll end the day with

dinner at the Rotary Club meeting at the Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club.

On Thursday, there will be golf for some, while others visit Hoag

Hospital, South Coast Plaza and Newport Hills Animal Hospital, Rennie

said.

Assisting Rennie with hosting duties are Kim DeBroux, Dan Hoffman,

Roger McGonegal, Rick Williams, Yvonne Smith, Corinne Rennie, Roger

Gilbert, Terry Rousselot, Tom Walley and Gary Myers.

Join the Exchange Club of Newport Harbor on Thursday at the Lido

Theatre for a charity screening of “The Black Rose,” with Orson

Welles, Tyrone Power, Jack Hawkins and Michael Rennie.

The festivities will begin at 5:30 p.m. with a food festival

featuring a dozen Newport area restaurants. The movie will start at

7:30 p.m. Proceeds from this charity event will go to the Orange

County Child Abuse Prevention Center and other local youth-centered

community programs.

Charitable contributions of only $40 per ticket may be made

payable to the Exchange Club Charitable Foundation. VIP seating is

available at $60 per ticket. All are earnestly invited to this

fun-filled casual evening of food, wine and entertainment.

CAREER AND COMMUNITY SERVICE DAY

Costa Mesa High School is looking forward to its first

collaborative Career and Community Service Fair on Wednesday. The

fair will be held from 9:45 a.m. to noon in the main gym.

Participants will include ROP instructors, local businesses such

as Hoag Hospital, the Police and Fire departments and more than 20

nonprofit organizations. With the combination of career and community

service, students will have the opportunity to investigate careers

and learn about how they can contribute to their community.

The guest speaker will be Paul Kanarek, CEO/founder of the

Princeton Review. He will be addressing each group at the beginning

of the period, sharing his insights on how to succeed in life after

high school.

Kanarek is well known for his inspiring and motivating

presentations. After “interviewing” our industry representatives,

students will be able to enter their questionnaires in an opportunity

drawing, with one prize being a college test prep course.

We are very excited about our upcoming event, as it rides the wave

of our district’s College Night 2003 at the Orange County Fairgrounds

from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.
