Small business and faith-based workshop

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development will host the

second day of a free, two-day workshop today in Costa Mesa.

The workshop is aimed at helping businesses and faith-based groups

buy equipment and reduce taxes by operating federally designated

Empowerment Zones and Renewal Communities.

Housing and Urban Development Assistant Secretary Roy Bernardi and

Santa Ana Mayor Miguel Pulido will participate.

The workshop will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Westin

South Coast Plaza, at 686 Anton Blvd. For more information, call

Costa Mesa gets the most for your money

The city of Costa Mesa was awarded the Excellence in Procurement

Award for the third consecutive year, a measure of the its dedication

to getting the most for the taxpayers’ money.

The national award recognizes organizational and operational

excellence by government and nonprofit agencies. Finance director

Marc Puckett, Purchasing Supervisor Cyndy West, Buyer Debbie Dobrott,

Storekeeper Rick Rolsheim and Accounting Specialist Amanda Koh are

responsible for bringing the prize to the city by using the city’s

money in the most efficient way possible.

The California Assn. of Public Purchasing Officers, the National

Assn. of Purchasing Management and the National Purchasing Institute

sponsor the procurement award program.

Costa Mesa competed against 38 cities in the United States and

Canada; including 10 from Orange County.

Arts conference in Costa Mesa

A conference for the International Network of Performing and

Visual Arts Schools is taking place this week in Costa Mesa.

The 21st annual conference, “Golden Opportunities -- the Bridge

from Conservatory to Career” is being hosted by the Orange County

High School of the Arts. More than 200 arts educators from around the

world are set to attend Oct. 23 to Oct. 26.

The conference will include speaking appearances by actor Edward

James Olmos, actress and gymnast Cathy Rigby, “Joan of Arcadia”

director Helen Shaver and Andrew R. Coulson, executive director of

the Education Division of the Music Intelligence Neural Development

Institute.

Workshops planned include cover a variety of topics on music,

dance, theater, writing, film and television and visual arts.

Arts educators will discuss challenges facing arts schools in

today’s educational environment at the conference. It will take place

at the Costa Mesa Hilton and Conference Center.

Marketplace founder named to national board

Robert Teller, founder an chairman of the board of the Orange

County Marketplace in Costa Mesa, was appointed to serve as a

regional member of the national advisory council for small businesses

because of his entrepreneurial knowledge, officials said.

Hector Barreto, of the US Small Business Administration in

Washington D.C., appointed Teller to serve as a regional

representative for the council’s Executive Committee. Teller will

serve as an advisor to officials of the Small Business Assn. and

attend special meetings held twice a year in the nation’s capitol.

Members are appointed for two-year terms and do not get paid for

their service. Teller can also be reappointed at the end of his term.
