Edison High looks to break winless streak
Four local prep football teams continue their run in league play with
all four games on tap Friday as the 2003 season enters its seventh
week.
FRIDAY’S GAMES
Edison (3-3, 0-1) vs. Marina (2-4, 0-1)
(at Huntington Beach High, 7 p.m.)
Edison gave top-ranked and defending Sunset League champion Los
Alamitos all it could handle during the opening week of league play
before eventually succumbing, 28-21. Joshua Gage had a breakthrough
rushing game with 116 yards and a pair of touchdowns and receiver
Matt White had a 81 yards and a touchdown among eight receptions and,
in addition, intercepted a pass.
The Chargers will be out to break a three-game winless streak when
they battle Marina.
The Vikings, meanwhile, took it on the chin at Esperanza, 42-7.
Marina was tied at 7-7 late in the first half, but the Vikings scored
just before intermission and shutout Marina in the second half.
Quarterback Matt Brennan had 125 yards of total offense to lead
the Vikings and threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Daniel Falkenstein.

Huntington Beach (0-6, 0-1) vs. Esperanza (4-2, 1-0)
(at Valencia High, 7 p.m.)
Huntington Beach played Fountain Valley tough during last week’s
21-6 loss but could find the going even tougher against an Esperanza
team that has won four straight and has outscored the opposition,
182-13, in the process.
Esperanza limited its first six opponents to 12 points per game.
Huntington comes into the game averaging just over 10 points on
offense.
The Aztecs are led by junior quarterback Grant Farrell, who threw
for 170 yards and two touchdowns in last week’s win over Marina.
Junior tailback Mike Kirschner, who came back from a broken foot,
made a statement in his first game of the season with three
touchdowns an a 7.0 per yards carry against the Vikings.

Ocean View (1-5, 0-3) vs. Westminster (5-1, 2-0)
(at Westminster High, 7 p.m.)
Ocean View not only will be out to win its first Golden West
League contest, but end an overall winless streak at five games.
Aaron Gonya led Ocean View in last week’s loss to Orange with 94
rushing yards and a touchdown.
The Seahawks will be up against a Westminster unit that has roared
to five consecutive victories. A key figure for the Lions is running
back Carols Brooks who is averaging 125 yards per game.
