Newport Harbor High senior Alyson Jennings slammed a team-high 10
kills to go with 18 assists as the visiting Sailors defeated
Foothill, 25-16, 25-19, 25-17, in a Sea View League girls volleyball
match Thursday.
The Sailors (13-4, 6-0 in league) won their seventh in a row with
help from Emily Turner’s eight kills and seven from Taryn Tarnutzer.
Lauren Miller tallied four kills and four service aces while
Kellie King amassed 17 assists. Jennings added two ace serves and
King contributed one.
Foothill fell to 4-2 in league.
Newport hosts Aliso Niguel at 5:15 p.m. Tuesday in a league match.
Eagles collect PRs
* CROSS COUNTRY: Freshmen Jeannette Abrego and Sydney Barloon
recorded personal-best performances to lead the Estancia High girls
cross country team to a 27-29 victory over Orange in a Golden West
double dual meet Thursday at Mason Park.
Estancia (3-3 in league) was edged by Saddleback, 28-29. Abrego
won the meet, finishing in 19:06, which was 19 seconds faster than
her previous best. Barloon came in third in 19:54, a six-second
improvement. Junior Okairy Lomeli finished 10th (20:47), while junior
Lucy Leon followed in at 11th (20:49) to help the Eagles.
Brittanie Starn (16th in 21:52), Crystal Rincon (17th in 22:11)
and Diana Castro (19th in 22:35) also competed for the Eagles.
Estancia Coach Charlie Appell said five of his seven girls earned
personal records, and out of the 33 runners in his program, 29 had
personal bests.
On the boys side, junior Alex Cahuantzi finished second in 15:29,
but the Eagles lost to Orange, 19-41, and Saddleback, 24-33. Senior
Mat Zich finished 10th (16:06) for the Eagles (3-3).
‘Eaters swept at UOP
* VOLLEYBALL: The UC Irvine women’s volleyball team suffered
back-to-back losses for the first time this season after being swept
by Big West Conference host Pacific, 30-26, 32-30, 30-27, Thursday.
Kelly Wing led the Anteaters (16-6, 7-3 in conference) with a
match-high 20 kills and 13 digs, while Dana Kurzbard added 14 kils.
Ashlie Hain recorded 35 assists for UCI.
The Anteaters earned game point in the second game, 30-29, but
Pacific came up with a kill, then UCI had an error and the Tigers’
Sarah Vinall ended it with a killd down the middle.
The Tigers (11-7, 6-4) were led by Jennifer Joines, who had 19
kills.
Sailors still undefeated
* SURFING: The Newport Harbor High surf team remained undefeated
with a 92-54 Sea View League victory over Calvary Chapel Thursday.
The Sailors (4-0) won all four events, sweeping boys shortboard,
boys longboard, boys bodyboard and girls (combined) short/longboard.
Joey Head, Christian Morabito and Brian Pearson were heat winners in
the boys shortboard, while Matt Kretschmar won the bodyboard, and
Tanner Prairie won the longboard. Erica Hosseini and Jill Austin won
for the girls.
Tars swing past Vaqs
* GOLF: Newport Harbor High’s girls golf team won its fourth match
in a row Thursday, a 247-289 Sea View League victory over Irvine, on
the par-36 Oak Creek Golf Club in Irvine.
Sailor sophomore Natalie Draganza shot 41 to earn medalist honors
while Kayleigh Horn fired a 48 and Katie McKay carded a 51. Marissa
Zehnder shot 52 followed by Erin Callahan’s 55 for the Sailors (8-9,
4-4 in league). Irvine fell to 5-11, 2-6.
Newport hosts Laguna Hills at 2:30 p.m. at Big Canyon Country Club
Tuesday before Woodbridge comes to the same site to conclude league
play Thursday.
Hughes leads Mustangs
* GOLF: Lianne Choi shot a 5-over-par 40 to earn medalist honors
and lead the Oxford Academy girls golf team to a 275-302 Golden West
League victory over Costa Mesa High Thursday on the par-35 Mesa Linda
course at Costa Mesa Golf & Country Club.
Rachel Hughes led the Mustangs with a 53 followed by a 55 from
Jean You and 59 by Teresa Stephens. Melissa Pardue shot 66 while
Reina Layug fired a 69.
Mesa next faces Orange at 3:30 p.m. Monday at Mesa Linda before
finishing league play Thursday against Estancia.
You sparks Estancia
* GOLF: The Estancia High girls golf team responded from its
narrow loss to Ocean View Tuesday with a 240-315 Golden West League
victory over Orange at River View Golf Club Thursday.
Freshman Lina You earned medalist honors for the Eagles (5-3 in
league) with a 41 on the par-34 course, while junior Sarah Lambert
shot 45. Sophomore Lauren Cushing and freshman Bridget Gleason both
carded a 51, and sophomore Lauren Donner followed with a 52.
Estancia lost to Ocean View, on a sixth player’s score for each
team to settle a 244-244 tie Tuesday.
The Eagles face Sage Hill Tuesday at 3:15 p.m. at Strawberry Farms
Golf Club.
Sage records best score
* GOLF: The Sage Hill School girls golf team recorded its best
score in school history, but lost to Golden West League foe Ocean
View, 248-268, Thursday at Meadowlark Golf Course.
Chelsea Vayner had the lowest score for Sage Hill (6-7, 4-4 in
league) with a 46 on the par-36 course, while Emma Koh (50), Natalie
Kraft (52), Madyson Page (59) and Michelle Liberman (61) also
contributed to the Lightning’s best score.
UCI’s Bormand advances
* TENNIS: UC Irvine junior Arash Bormand advanced to the main draw
of the ITA West regional championships at the Home Depot Center in
Carson, defeating Oscar Plotnik of San Diego 8-5 in the first round,
Nathan Cochrane of Arizona 5-7, 7-6, 15-13 in a marathon match and
finally Mark Contreras of UC Riverside to earn his way into the main
draw. Bormand joins junior Brian Morton, senior Zoran Korac, junior
Ryusuke Kashiwabara and senior Jon Endrikat in the main draw of the
singles tournament.
In the main draw of the doubles bracket, Jon Endrikat and Morton
are seeded No. 1. Korac and Kashiwabara make up the other doubles
team in the bracket for UCI.
VU falls to Lancers
* SOCCER: Cal Baptist shut out the host Vanguard women’s soccer
team, 2-0, in Golden State Athletic Conference action Thursday.
Sage downs Mustangs
* GOLF: Costa Mesa High senior Jean You earned medalist honors,
shooting 46, but the Mustangs girls golf team lost to Sage Hill,
275-321, Tuesday in Golden West League action at Rancho San Joaquin
Golf Club.
Freshman Emma Koh delivered the best score for the Lightning (6-6,
4-3 in league) with a 48, while freshman Natalie Kraft (52), senior
Chelsea Vayner (55), junior Megan McGillivray (60) and freshman
Andrea Han (60) also competed.
Senior Rachel Hughes shot a 58 for the Mustangs (1-6, 1-5).
Sage Hill denied
* VOLLEYBALL: The Sage Hill School girls volleyball team earned
one victory, but lost in four to Academy League visitor Brethren
Christian, 25-16, 18-25, 25-19, 25-19, Tuesday.
Cat Dailey led the Lightning (5-5, 3-2 in league) with 18 kills,
while Sophia Hillgren provided 13 kills and Haywood Wright recorded
six blocks. Brethren Christian improved to 11-6, 4-1.
VU tops Fresno Pacific
* SOCCER: Jenifer Zipprich and Khara Stoneback scored first-half
goals Tuesday and Katie Dynice added a goal in the 73rd minute as the
Vanguard University women’s team defeated host Fresno Pacific, 3-1,
in Golden State Athletic Conference action.
Zipprich scored in the 15th minute on a pass from Heather Hutton,
then Stoneback gave VU a 2-0 edge with an unassisted goal in the 29th
minute. Hutton also assisted on Dynice’s goal to give the Lions (9-6,
4-3 in the GSAC) a 3-0 lead in the second half. VU goalie Kim Becher
recorded four saves.
