Second NHBA tourney set
BRYCE ALDERTON
The first year was such a success they decided to it again this
November.
The second annual Wally Joyner and Friends Golf Classic, Newport
Harbor Baseball Association’s largest fund-raiser, yielded about
$35,000 last year and organizers have set the date and time for this
fall’s celebrity-infused tournament -- Nov. 14 at Talega Golf Club
in San Clemente.
Last year’s inaugural event attracted current Angel closer Troy
Percival and pitching coach Bud Black, along with San Diego Padres
Manager Bruce Bochy. Former Angels Bob Boone, Mike Witt, Kirk
McCaskill and Lance Parrish also played along with Dodger Coach Glenn
Hoffman. This year’s list is more extensive with invitations sent to
current Angels Garrett Anderson, Darin Erstad, Troy Glaus and Coach
Joe Maddon, along with Dodger right fielder Shawn Green.
Tournament proceeds benefit NHBA’s 800 members and will be used to
provide baseball scholarships for underprivileged children, improve
and maintain fields, purchase needed equipment, pay for professional
training for the coaches and provide player clinics. NHBA’s priority
is to ensure each child in Newport Beach and Costa Mesa who wants to
play baseball is not excluded for any reason. NHBA is a Pony
Baseball-affiliated nonprofit program for players ages 5-14.
Players will tee off in a shotgun start at 11 a.m. and compete in
a scramble format. An awards dinner and auction will cap the day’s
events.
Mayors Gary Monahan (Costa Mesa) and Tod Ridgeway (Newport Beach)
have been named honorary chairmen.
Sponsorship packages are available.
