Laguna Beach High’s girls’ tennis team had won its first 13 matches

of the 2003 season but on Tuesday, the Breakers were handed their

first defeat.

Host Corona del Mar scored a 12-6 victory over Laguna to create a

two-way tie between the two schools for the Pacific Coast League

lead.

It was the first match of the second-round of league play.

The win allowed the Sea Kings to avenge an Oct. 2 loss to the

Breakers and both teams are now 5-1 in league play.

In previous league play, Laguna downed visiting University, 13-5.

Lorren Butterwick got a sweep at No. 2 singles to lead the

Breakers.

The No. 1 doubles team of Jackie Reed and Briton Simons won two of

posted a 12-6 home victory over the Chargers.

No. 2 singles.

In boys’ water polo, Laguna fell to visiting Newport Harbor, 14-9,

in nonleague play.
