JIM DE BOOM

The Rotary clubs of Newport-Balboa, Newport-Irvine and Newport Beach

Sunrise held a joint meeting on Thursday, Oct. 16, to kick off the

2003 Reading by 9 campaign and are offering to match up to $6,800 in

contributions from Daily Pilot readers as they seek to buy needed

library books for Pomona, Whittier and Wilson elementary schools in

Costa Mesa.

The Rotary Club and the Daily Pilot Reading by 9 fund-raising

drive over the past several years has provided 16,500 reading books

for the three schools. Yet, more are needed if limited English

speaking children are to master the language and become productive

citizens.

Your $10 donation will be matched by the Rotary clubs to buy 11

reading books. A $25 donation will be matched to buy 30 books, a $50

donation will be matched to buy 58 books, and so on.

Your tax-deductible donation to buy Reading by 9 books can be made

payable and mailed to Rotary District 5320 Foundation, c/o the Daily

Pilot, 330 W. Bay St., Costa Mesa, CA 92627.

Make your investment and then watch the dividends grow! Make a

difference in the life of a child really needs you. Make your

tax-deductible contribution before the end of the year!

READ NEWPORT-MESA

Are you concerned about the low test scores at our schools in

Costa Mesa and Newport Beach? If so, join the Daily Pilot, the Rotary

clubs and the Newport-Mesa Unified School District in a new program,

Read Newport-Mesa, by giving one hour of your time once or twice a

month during the school day, reading to students at either Pomona,

Whittier or Wilson Elementary Schools.

Make a company, club, community group or congregation commitment

to Read Newport-Mesa and encourage interested employees and members

to take an hour once or twice a month to read to students at one of

the three elementary schools.

Volunteers can do it on their lunch hour, coffee break time or

during work hours. Companies, clubs, community groups and

congregations that make a commitment to Read Newport-Mesa will be

recognized in the Daily Pilot during the school year.

Students are available for Read Newport-Mesa from 8:15 a.m. to 2

p.m. Monday through Friday. It’s easy, it’s fun and it’s very

important if we are to help students master reading by the age of 9

and become productive members of our community.

It’s easy for you, your employees or members to participate. Just

call one of the three schools listed below and identify yourself as a

Read Newport-Mesa volunteer and identify the day and time you have

available, and you will be scheduled with a classroom teacher at the

school you called. The teacher will help you get started and provide

Reading by 9 books to use with the students.

You can be the real difference in improving reading skills in a

child. Call Pomona Elementary at (949) 516-6980, Whittier Elementary

at (949) 515-6990 or Wilson Elementary at (949) 5215-6995. See you at

school.

QUITE A HULLABALOO

Hullabaloo, a carnival-style event at the Orange County Fair and

Exposition Center from 5 to 9 p.m. on Friday, is being sponsored by

three Costa Mesa churches and Vanguard University. It will offer more

than 60 fun and safe activities for adults and children.

The free community event offers fun and safe activities for all

ages, including: 50 booths, a variety of inflatable activities, a

dunk tank, a climbing wall, a photo booth, a petting zoo, a local

fire engine and crew, and oodles of free candy and popcorn.

The three churches hosting the event are Newport Mesa Christian

Center, the Crossing, and ROCK Harbor. “Providing fun,

family-oriented Oct. 31 events has been a great way for each of these

churches to serve the local community over the past several years,”

said Jeff Keith, pastor of outreach for Newport Mesa Christian

Center.

Admission, parking, all activities, and candy are free. Food will

be available for a small cost. Costumes are welcome; masks will not

be allowed for safety reasons. Event attendees should enter off

Arlington Drive at Gate 4.

STATE OF EDUCATION

There is still time to get a ticket to Wednesday’s State of

Education presentation by William M. Habermehl, county superintendent

of schools, which is being held from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Westin Hotel

in Costa Mesa.

A who’s who of elected officials, school district superintendents

and business and community leaders will be joined by teachers to hear

the update on public education’s successes and challenges. Three

Character Education Awards will be presented at the event, held for

the benefit of Learning For Life and Exploring.

Major sponsors include Conexant, Orange County Teachers Federal

Credit Union, Harbor National Bank, Vanguard University, Northern

Trust Bank and Los Golondrinas Mexican Food Products.

Tickets at $50 each can be obtained by calling Debbie Clinton at

(714) 689-2323.
