Dan Noon, Phil Garcia and Rick Merlo scored four goals each to lead

No. 8 UC Irvine past 14th-ranked Pacific, 17-12, in a Mountain

Pacific Sports Federation men’s water polo game at Chris Kjeldsen

Pool in Stockton Sunday.

Noon, a junior, scored three of his goals in the first quarter as

the Anteaters (9-11, 1-2 in the MPSF) led, 5-3, after one period and

9-7 at halftime.

Pacific’s Eddie Wisniewski, who led all scorers with five goals,

cut UCI’s lead to 9-8 on a goal with 5:57 left in the third quarter.

After the Tigers’ Clint McLaughlin scored with 1:42 left in the third to trim the Anteaters’ lead to 11-9, the visitors went on a 5-0

run at the end of the third and into the fourth quarter to take a

commanding 16-9 lead.

The victory ended a three-game losing streak for UCI.

UCI Coach Ted Newland, in his 38th season at the helm of the

Anteaters, closed to within five victories of the 700 mark for his

career. He is now 695-325-5.

Sophomore goalie Joe Wynne had nine saves for UCI while Tom Markel

recorded four for Pacific (5-13, 0-5).

Noon leads the ‘Eaters with 49 goals this fall, while Garcia, a

senior, has 43. Merlo, a junior, is third on the UCI scoring list

with 32 goals this season.

UCI returns to action with a pair of MPSF road games, UC Santa

Barbara Saturday at 3 p.m. and at USC Sunday at noon.
