Newport Harbor’s frosh team making some noise

The Newport Harbor High freshmen football team continued its

undefeated (8-0) season with a 29-0 blanking of Sea View League foe

Aliso Niguel Oct. 23.

Newport running back Jasen Ruiz scored twice from the 5-yard line

and quarterback Kevin Williams added a 15-yard TD strike to Brett

Houten to make it 23-0. Williams scored the Sailors’ final TD on a

6-yard run. The offensive line featuring Frank Muscatello, James

Skahen, Brian Lawler and Ian Fowler, while the defense of Josh

Kelleher, Mike Cabrese, Madison Morrell and Brian Beaudette stopped

Aliso drives.

A week earlier Harbor defeated Foothill, 28-14. Ruiz scored on

touchdown runs of 7 and 22 yards and added a 60-yard scoring catch

for the Sailors. Williams hit Jarrett Daniel with a 15-yard touchdown

pass for Newport’s second score. The Sailors will host Irvine at 3

p.m. today.

Sea Kings trounce Titans

* VOLLEYBALL: Jordan Smith and Mackenzie Conover each had eight

kills to lead the visiting Corona del Mar High girls volleyball team

to a 25-22, 25-20, 26-24 Pacific Coast League victory against Tesoro

Tuesday.

Smith and Breanne Ogden each had 11 digs to go with 18 assists

from Ashley Bill. Lauren Snell tallied eight digs for CdM (16-7, 6-1

in league), which hosts University at 5 p.m. today.

Costa Mesa sweeps Orange

* VOLLEYBALL: A slow start didn’t stop the Costa Mesa girls

volleyball team from scoring a 25-22, 26-24, 25-22 Golden West League

victory over visiting Orange Wednesday.

Jackie Havens led the Mustangs (6-5, 6-3 in league) with nine

kills while Rachel Le added six. Jenny Sparks added 20 assists and

Lindsey Navarrette collected six service aces for the victors.

Lightning still strong in loss

* VOLLEYBALL: The Sage Hill School girls volleyball may have

fallen, 25-16, 25-16, 23-25, 25-22, to visiting St. Margaret’s in an

Academy League match Wednesday, but Lightning Coach Ingrid Gustavson

was pleased with the effort.

Sophia Hillgren led the Lightning (7-6, 5-3 in league) with eight

kills while Cat Dailey added six. Haywood Wright tallied five stuff

blocks and freshman setter Kelsey Lawler amassed 21 assists in a

backup role.

St. Margaret’s improved to 13-3, 8-0.

OCC edged by Fullerton

* WATER POLO: The Orange Coast College men’s water polo team lost

a 10-8 lead in the final four minutes, while visiting Fullerton

scored the go-ahead goal with 26 seconds left and won the Orange

Empire Conference regular-season finale, 12-10, Wednesday.

Abner Castorena led the Pirates with four goals, while Mike Martin

added three and Mike Vandenberg, Tyler Morales and Jason Grijilva

provided a goal each for OCC (15-12, 1-3 in conference). The Hornets

improved to 12-9, 2-2.

Pirates defeat Santa Ana

* VOLLEYBALL: Marit Merriott and Christine Woller each slammed 11

kills to lead the visiting Orange Coast College volleyball team to a

30-24, 30-14, 30-24 victory over Santa Ana in Orange Empire

Conference action Wednesday.

Sailors bury Hawks

* WATER POLO: Senior Michael Bury scored eight goals to lead the

Newport Harbor High boys water polo team to a 15-5 Sea View League

victory at Laguna Hills Wednesday.

The Sailors (12-8, 2-1 in league) led 7-3 at halftime and broke

the game open in the third quarter, outscoring Laguna, 4-0.

Andrew Belden and Sean McGhie scored two goals each, while Clay

Jorth, Bryan Auer and Telford Cottam added one goal each. Junior

goalie Michael Robinson recorded six saves for Newport.

Sage Hill boys lose by one

* CROSS COUNTRY: The Sage Hill School boys cross country team

lost, 27-28, and finished second in the regular-season standings to

St. Margaret’s in an Academy League double dual meet at Salt Creek

State Park in Dana Point Wednesday.

Sage Hill (5-2, 4-1 in league) defeated Brethren Christian, 15-49,

while the Lightning girls team also went 1-1, defeating Brethren,

20-35, but losing to St. Margaret’s, 21-39.

Sage Hill Coach Nate Miller said he was encouraged by his team’s

showing, considering senior Chris Chiboucas was still battling pain

in his hip and sophomore Zach Chandy was dealing with the flu.

Junior Mike Voge led Sage Hill, finishing second (16:23) , while

Chiboucas followed in fourth (16:37) and Chandy fifth (16:38). Junior

Tristan Cordier finished eighth (16:48) and sophomore Tim Lefler was

ninth (16:56).

The Sage Hill girls (2-5, 2-3) were led by freshman Mollie McGann,

who was second (20:14).

Kara Percival finished seventh (20:55) and Erica Faris came in

10th (22:13), while Kelsey Rose (24:46) and Elise Brito (24:47) also

competed.

Vanguard’s Hess scores four

* SOCCER: Vanguard University junior Matt Hess scored four goals

and led the Lions men’s soccer team to a 4-0 Golden State Athletic

Conference victory over visiting Westmont Tuesday.

The Lions (13-5-1, 6-2-1 in conference) outshot Westmont, 23-9.

Vanguard goalie Tommaso Bianchi recorded seven saves. Westmont

dropped to 6-9-1, 3-4-1.

Vanguard closes out the regular season Saturday at 7 p.m. at

Biola.

UC Irvine wins in overtime

* SOCCER: Freshman Lauryn Birkinshaw scored the game-winner off a

rebound, one minute and 22 seconds into overtime, leading the UC

Irvine women’s soccer team to a 3-2 win over Big West Conference

visitor Long Beach State Tuesday.

In overtime, UCI (9-3-5, 3-1-3 in conference) took the ball down

the field and got a shot off by Kim Lloyd. The shot was saved, but

Birkinshaw finished off the rebound.

Freshman goalkeeper Marissa Welliver had three saves for UCI.

Senior Caroline Kabe scored on a crossing pass by sophomore Kim Lloyd

in the 29th minute, while senior Hayley McNallan put UCI up 2-0 in

the 63rd minute on a pass from freshman Britney Webster.

The 49ers dropped to 8-8, 4-3.

Anteaters’ Krautim honored

* SWIMMING: UC Irvine freshman Duke Krautim was named Big West

Male Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week after winning two events

at the Triton Invitational.

Vanguard women shut out

* SOCCER: The host Vanguard women’s soccer team lost to defending

NAIA champion Westmont, 3-0, in Golden State Athletic Conference

action Wednesday.
