INSIDE CITY HALL

Here are some decisions coming out of Tuesday night’s City Council

meeting.

STATE MANDATES

A statewide ballot initiative to keep state hands off city dollars

has, not surprisingly, won city support. The council voted

unanimously to take a formal position in support of the statewide

measure. The initiative, which will be on the November 2004 ballot,

would forbid with state from reallocating or taking more government

revenues.

WHAT THEY SAID

City Manager Homer Bludau’s staff report best sums up the city’s

support of the state measure, arguing it will protect the city’s

ability “to provide the high level of services this community pays

fees and taxes for and deserves.”

BALBOA DOCKS AND MOORINGS

The council voted Tuesday to amend the city’s harbor permit

policies to tailor rules to some of the special circumstances that

exist on Balboa Island. Because some of the island channels are so

narrow, the city should be a little more strict on the size of yachts

docked there, staff suggested, and the council agreed.

PARKS COMMISSION

The city took the first necessary step toward filling newly

elected Councilman Steven Rosansky’s seat on the Parks, Beaches and

Recreation Commission on Tuesday by approving an item to begin

seeking applications from replacements.

WHAT IT MEANS

People interested in serving out the rest of Rosansky’s term have

until Nov. 13 to apply to the city clerk’s office. The council will

discuss the matter at their Nov. 25 meeting and will appoint someone

at Dec. 9. The new person will replace Rosansky, who vacated the seat

to become the city’s newest councilman.
