Supermarkets have been poorly managed

Gabe Houston feels the supermarkets should replace all striking

workers with permanent replacements in order to keep his grocery bill

from rising.

Houston should thank the current management of the supermarkets

for his high grocery bill. The fact of the matter is that the chains

have been poorly managed.

Why should the workers pay the price for an arrogant CEO’s

inability to run a company?

Thankful KOCE will remain public

Kudos for KOCE. The community will be able to watch educational

programming over religious indoctrination. History has shown that

religions have subverted education for centuries. The earth is flat,

evolution is false, women are inferior, the sun evolves around the

earth, languages came about from the tower of Babel, only Christians

(or fill in the blank) obtain heaven etc. etc.

The dark ages were the times of religious rule. Those times free

from the bondage of organized religion were called the age of

enlightenment.

You should know where Stater Bros. is

We can’t understand how the editor of a local paper wouldn’t know

or care to find out where a Stater Bros store is in Huntington Beach.

We’ve been going to the one at Goldenwest Street and Warner Avenue

ever since the employees of the three major chains went on strike or

were locked out. As a former reporter and professor of journalism at

the University of Kansas, I find such slipshod reporting inexcusable.

So, please just add this e-mail to the many we assume you’ve already

received. It will be difficult to give credence to your columns in

the future.

It’s hard to tell if Danette Goulet is joking or not when she

states, “There is a rumor we have a Stater Bros. here in Huntington,

although I’ve never seen it.” If not, then Goulet either doesn’t get

out much or has never taken Reporting 101. Even if you’ve never

driven by it, a quick check of the phone book will show not one but

two Stater Bros. stores in Huntington Beach -- one on Warner [Avenue]

and one on Adams [Avenue.] And let’s not forget another picket line

alternative in Huntington Beach, Mothers Market on Beach Boulevard.

Lastly, who was responsible for the punctuation in the article

headline? Based upon “natives” plural in the article, the headline

punctuation should have been “Shoppers’ patience thins.”

One shooting range in the city is enough

There is already an indoor shooting range in Huntington Beach. I’m

not sure whose idea it was that Huntington needs a shooting range.

But they did no do their research. If they had they would know we

already have one. It’s small and controlled, which is perfect for

Huntington Beach. Those who need to use it already do. If there were

to be another shooting range, it should be just that, small and

controlled.

Fires another good reason to use El Toro

The impact of the wildfires on our region prove once again the

enormous value of reusing the air station at the former El Toro

Marine Corps Air Base as an operational airfield. Its location is

perfect for stationing firefighting resources (land and air), as well

as standing by as backup runways for Miramar and Camp Pendleton.

Use of El Toro as an airport would have virtually no impact on

Huntington Beach. Long Beach Airport does impact our community! Maybe

it’s time for the voters to revisit the old misguided Measure W that

eliminated using El Toro as an airport?
