Tars sweep host Irvine

The Newport Harbor High girls volleyball team, headed for the

prestigious Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions today and Saturday,

remained undefeated Thursday in the Sea View League with a sweep over

host Irvine, 25-13, 25-21, 25-20.

Senior standout Alyson Jennings sparked Newport Harbor (15-4, 8-0

in league) with 16 kills, 20 assists and one service ace, while Kiley

Hall (eight kills) were Elizabeth Clayton (four kills and two aces)

solid. Taryn Tarnutzer added five kills and two solo blocks for the

Sailors, while teammate Kellie King had 22 assists and one ace.

Coach Dan Glenn’s team opens against Stockdale at 11 a.m. today

and will face in the second round the winner or loser of the

Oxnard-Presentation match.

CdM runs through Uni

* CROSS COUNTRY: Annie St. Geme and Hilary May each set personal

bests to lead the Corona del Mar High girls cross country team to a

15-50 Pacific Coast League win over University Thursday at Bonita

Creek Park.

St. Geme took 52 seconds off her previous best to place first

overall with an 18:06 followed by May, who broke her prior best by 30

seconds with a second-place finish in 18:44. The Sea Kings (6-0 in

league) took the top seven spots with Taryn Kawata (19:12), Devin

Ahearn (19:13), Christie St. Geme (19:36), Ahlia Kattan (19:38) and

Melissa Swigert (19:50).

The CdM boys tallied a 17-46 victory with Kevin Artz setting a

personal best and finishing first with a 15:45 followed in second

place by Jack Turner (16:12, also a personal record), Jerritt Thayer

(16:47), Kenneth Wong (16:53), Garrett Prechel (16:53), Brandon

Borcoman (16:58) and Chris Ringstrom (17:00).

Tars edged by Warriors

* GOLF: Visiting Woodbridge High’s girls golf team defeated

Newport Harbor on the sixth player’s score after both teams finished

their Sea View League match tied at 256 Thursday at the par-36 Big

Canyon Country Club.

Newport sophomore Natalie Draganza earned medalist honors with a

40 and was followed by Kayleigh Horn (45), Katie McKay (52), Ashley

Jacobs (58) and Erin Callahan (61).

Woodbridge’s sixth player, Marley Wing, shot a 57 to edge a

Newport player who carded a 66.

Eagles hold off Sage

* WATER POLO: Estancia High’s boys water polo team jumped to a 9-2

halftime lead and held off visiting Sage Hill to win, 10-7, in a

nonleague game Thursday.

Paul Collier led the Eagles (7-10, 1-4 in league) with six goals

followed by one apiece from Anthony Hermann, Chad Kunert, Matt

Metkovich and Jason Echanique.

Richard McElveny made 10 saves in goal during the first two

quarters for Estancia while Hermann finished the game and made four

saves.

Sailors trounce Vaqueros

* TENNIS: Newport Harbor High senior Diana Khoury swept at No. 2

singles and the No. 1 doubles team of A.J. Olson and Sasha Dunlap

also swept to pace the Sailors’ 15-3 Sea View League girls tennis win

at Irvine High Thursday.

The Sailors (14-4, 7-1 in league) remained tied atop the league

standings and can clinch a CIF Southern Section playoff berth with a

victory over Laguna Hills Monday.

Sage trumps Brethren

* TENNIS: Sage Hill School’s girls tennis team rolled to an 18-0

Academy League victory over host Brethren Christian Thursday to

clinch at least a share of the league title.

Sarah Geocaris, Stephanie Langer and the doubles team of Jessica

Tsoong and Sarah Flynn didn’t lose a game in sweeping three sets

while Alle Hsu and the doubles teams of Laura Webb-Grace Graham and

Danielle Berman-Salen Andrews rolled to three victories for the

Lightning (12-3, 10-0 in league), ranked No. 1 in CIF Southern

Section Division V.

Sea Kings show depth

* TENNIS: Rachael Miller lost just one game in sweeping at No. 1

singles as the Corona del Mar High girls tennis team defeated

visiting Calvary Chapel, 15-3, in a Pacific Coast League match

Thursday.

Michelle Atkins also won three sets while Rachel Bryan added two

more victories in singles for the Sea Kings (10-4, 7-1 in the PCL).

CdM’s No. 1 doubles team of Jackie Manning and Miranda Young swept

all three sets while the duo of Hayley Young and Kelly McKitterick

took two of three sets. Stephanie Chen and Lindsay Norman won one

set. Several of the Sea King starters got a chance to rest Thursday.

Lions swept on the road

* VOLLEYBALL: The Master’s College swept visiting Vanguard, 30-28,

30-25, 30-20, in Golden State Athletic Conference women’s volleyball

action Thursday.

Marissa Cothran had 34 assists and Lindsay Kaiser scraped up 25

digs in the match for Vanguard (13-8, 7-8 in the GSAC). Keri DeHaas

and Livia Peace each had eight kills for the Lions.

Vikings down OCC

* SOCCER: Host Long Beach City defeated Orange Coast, 6-0, in

nonconference women’s soccer Thursday. The Vikings (14-1), ranked No.

1 in the nation, scored five goals in the first half. OCC fell to

5-8-2.

UCI upsets UCSB

* SOCCER: The UC Irvine Anteaters (6-8-1, 3-1-1 in the Big West)

upset the ninth-ranked UC Santa Barbara Gauchos, 1-0, Wednesday in

Santa Barbara.

Junior forward Sebastian Galmarini scored the lone goal of the

game for UCI at the 79:15 mark. Galmarini took the ball from a UCSB

player 10 yards out of the penalty box and drove down the left side

of the field, past another Gaucho defender and knocked the ball to

the far post past goalkeeper Dan Kennedy for his fifth goal of the

season. UCI goalkeeper Cameron Rossi picked up three saves while

earning the shutout.

The win for the Anteaters broke a UCSB winning streak of 11

straight Big West home games. The win moves UCI into a tie for second

place in the Big West, just two points behind the Gauchos.

The Anteaters travel to Fullerton on Saturday at 7 p.m. to face

Cal State Fullerton at Titan Stadium.
