CdM stalled until Saturday

Corona del Mar High’s Pacific Coast League football game against

Northwood Thursday was postponed until Saturday, when it will be

played at Irvine High at 7 p.m.

The decision was a mutual one by both schools, made by the

principals and athletic directors, because of the lack of practice

the teams had this week as a result of the poor air quality resulting

from the fires throughout Southern California.

The Irvine Unified School District prevented athletic teams from

practicing Monday and Tuesday. Corona del Mar was limited to

walk-throughs on those days. It wasn’t until early Wednesday

afternoon that teams, including Northwood and Corona del Mar, were

given the OK to hold practices.

By that time, discussions had already gotten underway about

postponing the game.

“It was in the best interest of the kids not to just throw them

out there,” Northwood Athletic Director Derek Roche said.

The game holds much interest with the Sea Kings (5-2, 2-0 in

league) and Timberwolves (6-1, 2-0) tied for first place along with

Tesoro (5-2, 2-0).

“We got a couple of days of rest and that was the goal for us,”

Corona del Mar Coach Dick Freeman said. “I think we’ve got our legs

back and we seem to have adjusted to the change.”

Freeman’s only concern is the shortened turnaround for the

following week. The Sea Kings play Tesoro in another crucial league

battle on Nov. 7.
