Mustangs’ Day wins Golden West individual title

Costa Mesa High sophomore Jasmin Day won the Golden West League girls

cross country individual title and led the undefeated Mustangs to the

league crown Wednesday at Central Park in Huntington Beach.

Day finished in 18:41, while Emily Cotton took third (19:29) and

Christine Bjelland followed in fifth (19:51). Kyla Flores finished

eighth (20:08) and Hahn Nguyen (22nd in 20:36) also competed for

Costa Mesa, which finished with 39 points. Second-place Santa Ana had

48 points. Estancia, which was without Sydney Barloon, came in fifth.

Jeannette Abrego led the Eagles, finishing seventh (20:08), while

Okairy Lomeli (20th in 22:04), Diana Castro (32nd in 22:34) Lucy Leon

(34th in 23:14), Brittanie Starn (36th in 23:29), Crystal Rincon

(37th in 23:43) and Fatima Carrasco (38th in 23:55) also competed.

On the boys side, Estancia finished fourth in the Golden West,

just four points behind third-place Santa Ana, which had 69 points.

Alex Cahuantzi qualified for CIF competition, finishing fourth

(16:12) for the Eagles, while Ernesto Castenda came in eighth

(16:36). Estancia’s Matt Zich finished 12th (16:43), while C.J.

Buchmann (22nd in 17:32), Panfilo Elias (31st in 18:22), Martin Diaz

(35th in 18:47) and Geovani Rodea (37th in 19:20) also competed.

Marco Huipe (17:03), Juan Avilez (18:10) and Steve Kosnosky

(18:20) were the top runners for Costa Mesa.

Cutensese wins 100th

Coast College women’s volleyball team swept host Saddleback

Wednesday, 30-12, 30-24, 30-21, as OCC Coach Chuck Cutenesse won his

100th Orange Empire Conference victory. OCC (14-1, 9-1 in the OEC)

travels to No. 1 Golden West on Friday.
