Golden West honors pillars in education
The Golden West College Foundation presented its 12th annual
Courtyard of Honor ceremony Oct. 21 in the President’s Courtyard of
Honor.
This year’s ceremony honored three Pillar of Support donors and
four Alumni Pillar of Achievement recipients.
Golden West College Pillar of Support donors are individuals and
corporations who contribute $25,000 or more and are honored with a
plaque attached to one of the selected concrete pillars, which serve
to architecturally support the campus buildings.
Gary and Andrea Parsons were acknowledged for their
accomplishments in higher education. Gary taught courses in the
technology and math departments for nearly thirty years until his
death in 1990. The pillar was dedicated in memory of Gary by his
loving wife, Andrea, their children and families.
The Assistance League of Huntington Beach, a chapter of the
National Assistance League, was acknowledged for its noble efforts to
enhance the quality of life for all deserving children and adults.
The foundation also honored the Ebell Club in Newport Beach.
Golden West College Alumni Pillar of Achievement recipients serve
as role models of inspiration and motivation for our students,
validating the importance of community college education through
their experiences and accomplishments.
Pamela Joanne Banks, Jose B. Cuellar, John Lantow and Gregory M.
Villegas were given Alumni Pillar of Achievement awards.
Pegasus to hold fund-raiser
The Pegasus School Walk-A-Thon, a fund-raiser benefiting Parent
Teacher Organization activities that benefit Pegasus students
campuswide, will take place Friday.
Each student seeks sponsors who pledge money for every lap
completed, or for a fixed donation amount. On the day of the
walk-a-thon, each student will have 30 minutes to walk as many laps
as he or she is able, with a maximum of 20. The walk-a-thon runs in
place of the students’ normal physical education class and requires
no great level of physical exertion.
Risa Groux, walk-a-thon coordinator, captured the interest of the
school’s students on Monday with a her walk-a-thon 2003 presentation,
said Margaret Kohlbeck, associate director of community relations and
publications at Pegasus. The school is at 19692 Lexington Lane in
Huntington Beach.
Pennies for prevention chips in
The 2003 Huntington Beach Pennies for Prevention campaign yielded
six tons of cash and coins worth more than $22,000, another increase
from the fund-raiser’s previous year.
All of the schools in the Ocean View and Huntington Beach City
school districts participated, with Kettler Elementary School
collecting 950 pounds and Spring View Middle School accumulating
$1,088 -- the highs for each district.
The high schools and one private school joined the community-wide
effort, with most schools collecting 300 to 400 pounds of coins. Each
school receives a check for $1 for each pound of coins collected,
which can be used for site-based prevention programs.
More than 75 businesses displayed collection containers and a
group of fourth-and fifth-grade girls from Circle View Elementary
School collected more than $500.
Performing Arts fund-raiser kicks off
The Academy for the Performing Arts is launching a fund-raiser,
“The Merry Elves,” which will send two academy students perform at
holiday parties at homes or companies.
The act includes humorous songs, comedy and audience
participation. Elves may also be booked to assist with award or gift
presentations, visits from Santa or photo opportunities.
The Elf Act lasts 15 to 20 minutes and costs $195. An hour-long
visit, which will include the Elf Act if desired by the customer,
costs $300.
Money earned through “The Merry Elves” will be deposited in a
special account for a trip to Edinburgh, Scotland, and credited to
participating students to offset their costs for the festival.
For more information on “The Merry Elves,” or for booking
information, call (714) 235-7550.
