Cal Poly shuts out UC Irvine, 2-0

Goals by freshman Kelsey Carroll and junior Erin Martin lifted

top-seeded Cal Poly San Luis Obispo to a 2-0 win over UC Irvine in

the opening game of the Big West Conference women’s soccer tournament

at Anteater Stadium Friday night.

With the win, the Mustangs advance to Sunday’s 1 p.m. championship

game against the winner of UC Santa Barbara/UC Riverside. Sunday’s

final also will be played at Anteater Stadium.

Carroll scored an unassisted goal at 13:14 from outside the box on

a misplay by the Anteater defense. Martin’s second-half goal came at

74:08 on a cross from Sharon Day (Costa Mesa High) as Cal Poly

sophomore goalkeeper Liz Hill recorded her ninth shutout of the

season.

The Mustangs, ranked 20th in the nation by Soccer America,

extended their undefeated streak to 10 games as they improved to

17-1-2 on the season. Hill had five saves as Cal Poly recorded its

fifth straight shutout. The Mustangs outshot the Anteaters, 9-5.

UCI, seeded fourth, received nine saves from freshman goalkeeper

Marissa Welliver. The Anteaters ended their season with a record of

10-5-5.

OCC teams victorious

* CROSS COUNTRY: The men and women’s cross country teams at Orange

Coast College both won Southern California regional titles Friday at

Mount San Antonio College.

OCC’s Art Diaz was crowned the Southern California men’s

individual champion with a time of 20:50 as he led the Pirates to the

team title with 35 points. San Bernardino Valley was second with 113

points.

Jose Casillas (fourth in 20:55), Humberto Rojas (fifth in 21:03),

David Ojeda (12th in 21:32), Irwin Salas (13th in 21:33), Koyhar

Naderi (24th in 21:57) and Vidal Barragan (42nd in 22:22) scored for

Orange Coast, which will compete in the state championships Nov. 22.

With 76 points, the OCC women captured the Southern California

title with a team time of 1:34:46, led by Ava Jones, who finished

second overall in 17:53. Jones was followed by teammates Sandra

Montoya (seventh in 18:35), Annie Garton (13th in 19:06), Ludi Valdez

(16th in 19:12), Jennifer Sliwa (39th in 20:00), Sarah Delan (45th in

20:12) and Jane Alder (59th in 20:38).

Azusa beats VU in four

* VOLLEYBALL: Jenna Sagehorn had 17 kills to lead Azusa Pacific’s

women to a 30-20, 30-10, 26-30, 30-27 Golden State Athletic

Conference victory Thursday night over visiting Vanguard (14-10, 8-10

in the GSAC).

Sonrisa Peace (nine kills) led VU, along with Kelli Whittaker

(eight), Keri DeHaas (seven) and Jaclyn Lee (seven). Azusa improved

to 16-12, 8-9.

OCC tops Riverside

* SOCCER: Nestor Flores scored in the 16th minute and Joel

Sotolongo broke a 1-1 tie in the second half with a goal in the 68th

minute Friday as the Orange Coast College men’s soccer team edged

visiting Riverside, 2-1, in Orange Empire Conference action.

Sotolongo scored on a diving header on an assist from Eli Solis.

OCC improved to 12-5-1, 9-3-1 in the OEC, while Riverside fell to

4-14, 3-10.

Apodaca earns hat trick

* SOCCER: Allison Apodaca scored a hat trick in the first half

Friday to lead the Orange Coast College women’s soccer team to a 5-0

Orange Empire Conference victory over visiting Golden West (0-14-1,

0-13-0 in the OEC).

OCC (6-8-3, 5-6-3) added two second-half goals by April Pate.

Apodaca scored in the 14th, 21st and 26th minutes from various

angles.

OCC in fourth place

* SAILING: The Orange Coast College sailing team is in fourth

place after four races Friday in the opening day of the three-day

Intercollegiate Sailing Association Sloop North American championship

at SUNY Maritime College in Throggs Neck, New York.

Kings Point leads the event with 13 points, while Coach Jim

Jorgensen’s Pirates trail by only three points.

OCC sophomores Payson Infelise, Nathaniel Campbell and Carson

Reynolds will compete again today in the 10-race competition. “The

conditions [Friday] were sunny and nice and the winds were pretty

light, between eight and 12 knots,” Jorgensen said.

Pirates second in OEC

* GOLF: The Orange Coast College women’s golf team finished second

at the two-day Orange Empire Conference championships, completed

Wednesday at El Prado Golf Course in Chino. The performance earned

the Pirates a berth in the Southern California championships

scheduled Monday, also at El Prado.

OCC posted a 36-hole team total of 725, trailing Saddleback (619)

and besting Santiago Canyon (746) and Golden West College (793).

Lorraine Fernando paced OCC (86-85--171), followed by teammates Laura

Sumpter (96-89--185), Joanne Durocher (96-86--182), Megan Parkovich

(98-102--200) and Ashlee Kendall (105-89--194).

Sailors handle Hawks

* GOLF: Sea View League individual champion Natalie Draganza

shared medalist honors with teammate Kayleigh Horn Wednesday to help

the Newport Harbor High girls golf team cap its league season with a

246-260 win over Laguna Hills at the Santa Ana Country Club.

Draganza and Horn shot 8-over-par 44, while Katie McKay (48),

Ashley Jacobs (52) and Carolyn Conway (59) rounded out the efforts

for the Sailors (5-5 in league).

Mustangs tie Anteaters

* SOCCER: The UC Irvine men’s soccer team tied visiting Cal Poly

San Luis Obispo, 1-1, in a Big West Conference game Wednesday night.

Junior Dardo Acuna put UCI (6-8-3, 3-1-3 in conference) ahead with

his first goal of the season, but free kick by Mark Jones in the 64th

minute gave the Mustangs (6-6-4, 2-4-2) the equalizer.

UCI enters Saturday’s 1 p.m. game at Cal State Northridge in a

second-place tie with UCSB. Both are one point behind

conference-leading Cal State Northridge.

Anteaters finish 16th

* GOLF: The UC Irvine women’s golf team finished 16th at the Kent Youel Invitational Wednesdayat the Kapolei Golf Course in Honolulu,

Hawaii.

The Anteaters shot a final round of 321 to finish with a

three-round total of 956 (314-321-321). Sophomore Angela Won led UCI,

finishing third after shooting par 72 Wednesday and 221 (75-74-72)

for the tournament.

Freshman Minnie Choi (78-80-82--240) was 59th and sophomore Reanna

Yun (78-86-84--248) was 75th. Junior Shelly Raworth (249) was 80th

and senior Karlie Ward (256) was 86th.

UCI duo seeded fourth

* TENNIS: The doubles team of senior Jon Endrikat and junior Brian

Morton have been seeded fourth at the 2003 ITA National

Intercollegiate Indoor Championships. There are 16 doubles teams invited to play in the tournament. They open play Thursday against

Jarmaine Jenkins and Nathan Thompson of Clemson. Earlier this season

at the ITA/All-American Championships in Chattanooga, Endrikat and

Morton defeated Jenkins and Thompson, 8-5.

UCI duo recognized

* HONORS: UC Irvine sophomore Zack Zucker was named Big West

Conference Male Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week after winning

the 100-yard breaststroke event against UC Santa Barbara, Cal Poly

and Cal State Northridge at the Big West Shootout.

Zucker’s time of 57.31 was fourth overall in the meet and topped

his season-best mark of 59.01.

UCI freshman Ashley DePaul was named Big West Conference Female

Athlete of the Week. She broke the school record in the 100 and 200

butterfly events with times of 56.81 and 2:06.73 at the Big West

Shootout. Her time in the 100 fly placed first in the competition

against UCSB, Cal Poly and Cal State Northridge and was third overall

in the Big West Shootout. Her time of 2:06.73 topped her season-best

mark of 2:08.23.

Hess Lion of Week

* HONORS: Vanguard University junior men’s soccer star Matt Hess

has been named the school’s Lion of the Week for the second time this

fall.

Hess scored all four goals in a shoutout win over Westmont and

finished with 29 goals this season. He also had six assists to total

64 points and scored in 11 of the team’s 20 games, including nine

multi-goal performances.
